I’m starting to cry as I type this. You all know I love Mugler. Getting to wear @manfredthierrymugler’s ICONIC Les Echineides dress from his S/S 1989 Les Atlantes collection is truly a fashion dream realized. I still can believe I was on live television in this dress. I’m literally obsessed with this dress and collection and with Mugler. … I am told this is 1 of 3 possibly 4 of these dresses that were ever made and the only one in this color. The color in this lurex fabric reads completely differently depending on the lighting. In this glambot video it appears to be black leather. It definitely not black or leather. But it’s exciting how the dress is alive. I remember being so happy going on my first tour with the State of Alabama ballet when I was at the Alabama School of Fine Arts performing a few small roles in the Nutcracker in high school. I loved ballet so much. I still do. Being a ballet dancer wasn’t my destiny. But I worked really hard at it. It taught me so much about discipline, what it means to really work hard and improve, about history, music, the vaganova vs cecchetti methods etc. I also learned deeply about hating my body, self-flagellation, never being enough. Later i learned my perfectionism was rooted in shame. That took years to unravel. That journey continues. Both/ and right? … But this music from Tchaikovsky that I once had heard too much I was sick of it, I hear anew in this exquisite execution of Balanchine’s most musical of choreography in this exuberant performance from @ashleybouder and this wonderful orchestra. Dare I say this has me in the holiday spirit. Or maybe just in the spirit? Brava Ashley!!

Caption : New Music!! New Music!! New Music!!! Well the music is actually quite old, composed by Franz Schubert in 1817. It’s a German lied or song called “Der Tod und das Mädchen” or “Death and the Maiden” in English. I fell in love with this lied obsessively listening to a Jessye Norman live recital album in high school. Because the lied has 2 different characters I thought it could be interesting to sing the Maiden in Soprano and Death in Baritone since I can. So many singers have sung this beautifully. Caption : 34 years ago in 1989, @therealconniegirl, an openly trans black woman got on a plane to Paris to walk for @manfredthierrymugler in his F/W 1989 runway show. She was a muse for Mr. Mugler for several more iconic seasons, iconic looks and legendary runway moments. I had the privilege of witnessing Connie’s return to the Mugler runway in Paris tonight (She modeled for Mugler’s H&M collab earlier this year. The runway show was in New York City). I also had the privilege of interviewing Connie for my podcast #TheLaverneCoxShow. The 2 part iconic interview dropped last week. I had no idea I would see Connie on the runway tonight. Anti-trans health bans have gone into or stayed in effect in multiple states as conservative courts have ruled in favor of the anti-trans lawmakers who have effectively capitalized on the rhetoric that demonizes our lives, bodies and health care. In this last year, our material realities have been altered in catastrophic ways that will continue to be unraveled over the coming years. We have seen a loss of care in a matter of months that parallels abortion care erosion that took place over decades. In the span of a week, three devastating court rulings have potentially changed the course of trans litigation for years—if not decades. And there is so little awareness of how quickly and dangerously this is playing out. Even in the context of exceedingly conservative courts we are seeing departures from typical practice in favor of harming us and upending our lives. Soon, state legislatures will convene again and further target trans life and as the GOP primaries pick up, we will be situated as either a posturing device for the right to establish their far right credentials or an example of progressivism having gone too far for the center (which include many dems). In liberal enclaves gender binaries will be reinforced and our existence quietly questioned or publicly debated in the manner of the NYT. This is not the time for silence from allies and accomplices. They have trained their attacks on us but make no mistake everyone is imperiled by this. Today feels hopeless but by tomorrow I will be energized. In this fight I will stay focused on our histories of resistance and our indefatigable ability to love and care for each other. Please if you read this post consider this a ten alarm fire.
