Michael Bearden Instagram - I was going to post another photo of me and MJ today (I’ve posted this one before) but, something I heard @realchriswebber say amidst the @nba boycott resonated with me. He said, you can’t be it until you see it! ⠀
As a young black boy growing up on the south side of Chicago, it was important for me to see someone that looked like me doing what I aspired to do. Image matters so much! ⠀
There’s no possible way I could’ve known I’d grow up to work with one who inspired me. How could I?⠀
I do know that I can help inspire others who look like me, to rise into their own greatness! ⠀
I miss MJ! Just the convos alone were deep. But, I’m also grateful for the time I did have with him while he was here on this plane. He was an inspiration to many. And,still inspiring. ⠀

Michael Bearden Instagram - It was exactly 10 years ago that This Is It was released. When Kenny, Travis and I were first asked to come in by Sony to view the raw footage, I didn’t know what to expect. I hadn’t seen anything during rehearsals. My main focus was making sure the music was what MJ needed it to be. Suffice to say, I don’t think we even got through 5 minutes or so without all of us becoming quite emotional. It’s been 10 years since I’ve watched the film. (It’s a personal choice) Although, I know every frame, I physically lived it. Some things were just not able to be captured by cameras. I’m choosing to hold on to those off camera moments. Nevertheless, I’m still so grateful for the film. We made it for the fans. It was an honor project, not a glory project. So many around the world have told us how this film has helped them cope with MJ’s passing. And for that, I’m so unbelievably grateful. 🙌🏾 M~ #thisisit

I have not watched ‘This Is It’ since that day, (personal choice. I lived every frame)⠀

Michael Bearden Instagram - I first met Tony in London many years ago when I was working with Liza Minelli. After one of the shows at Royal Albert Hall, Tony came backstage. ⠀
⠀
The crazy thing to me was, he came directly over to me to tell me how much he enjoyed my piano playing. He said, “you really know how to follow a singer young man.” My mouth on the floor, I was like, “thank you Mr. Bennett!” I was still so young in the business at that time. ⠀

I ended up talking to him for a bit that night. Just about music and stuff. ⠀
⠀
After that first meeting, I had the pleasure of seeing Tony and, working with him a few times on various shows and events. He was always class personified. ⠀
⠀
Towards his final days, I was honored to have been the music director and conductor, for his last ever public musical performance at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. ⠀
⠀
As his health was deteriorating, I was most insistent that we try to make Tony’s final bows on the concert stage a memorable one. I really wanted it to be as grand as possible, to match the stature of Tony’s amazing life and career! ⠀

Although it was difficult emotionally because of his health, I was so grateful that thee Lady trusted me and agreed to the show. They were both magnificent! It was magical!

After the show, I walked over to Mr. Bennet and his wife to thank him and say good show. He did not say my name, but he walked very close to my face, he always smiled when he saw me, looked me directly in the eyes and said, “we did good huh?” 😢 Yes! Mr, Bennett. We did good! ⠀

I will never forget that for the rest of my days!⠀

There are not enough superlatives to describe the enormity of Tony Bennet! He was an extraordinary human being on many levels. And, not just music. I am forever grateful to have known such a person in my life time. ⠀

Michael Bearden Instagram - So, this time a year ago, I was rehearsing these two for the Oscars. (I’ve worked on many Oscars shows!) However, this performance ended up being one of the most magical performances I’ve been part of in my long career. Blessed! 🙌🏾 I never know how so many candid photos seem to appear seemingly out of nowhere. ☺️ When working with mega stars, there always seem to be cameras present somewhere. I’m used to that. But, I really appreciate this particular capture. It shows a real human moment. In the midst of the weight and gravity of the event that was to come the next day, we were still able to find time to have some fun with it! Trust your gift! M~ (fun fact: On the day of the show run through, I played Gaga so the Director could get his shots. I played piano. Did not sing tho. Lol 😂)

Michael Bearden Instagram - Please indulge, as I'd like to share a quick story I was told from my friend, and legend @NileRodgers, as we were catching up recently. ⠀
⠀
Nile was working with the #MakeAWishFoundation and a young girl with a terminal illness wanted to meet Michael. She had written a letter. Nile, who knew MJ for a long time, contacted Michael and told him about the letter. He also asked if they could come to the show when he was in NYC. It was the 'Off the Wall' tour. MJ's first solo tour.⠀
⠀
Not only did Michael oblige with the tickets, he spotted Nile and the young girl in the audience, made his way off stage while performing, and went over to them to invite them backstage after the show. As you might imagine, everyone wanted to know who the little girl was.⠀
⠀
The little girl was able to meet MJ and many of the other celebrities that attended the show. Needless to say, she had the time of her life.⠀
⠀
MJ called Nile many months later to work on something in the studio with him when he got back to NYC. MJ asked Nile about the little girl. Michael didn't know she passed away maybe less than a month after the concert.⠀
⠀
With everything that goes on in a typical day for MJ, the fact that he even remembered the encounter at all, after so much time had passed is amazing. Yes. ⠀
⠀
But, the even more extraordinary thing is that the little girl was actually thankful for her terminal illness! She said that if she had not been stricken with the disease that would eventually end her life, a regular, ordinary person like her (paraphrasing her words) would never have even had the chance to meet MJ in person. ⠀
⠀
Think about THAT! How many of us would ever think to flip it like that?! That story blew me away when Nile told it to me.⠀
⠀
The last thing MJ said to me was, "God bless you. Love you. See you tomorrow." (We said that almost every night) And, I never saw him again. I just assumed I would.⠀
⠀
Never take ANY of this for granted! Every day is a complete blessing! No matter the circumstances on the outside. I am embracing even more gratitude today and every day moving forward. I'd like to be as profound and inspiring as that little girl when grow up!⠀

I absolutely loved the movies. Especially the trilogy of ‘Uptown Saturday Night’, ‘ Let’s Do It Again’, ‘A Piece Of The Action’.⠀

As a young man, I learned he was the first black man ever to win an academy award. He also was a champion of civil rights that moved in the world with grace, style and dignity! ⠀

The word “icon” is thrown about a lot. In the case of Sidney Poitier, he is the true definition of the word. ⠀

I’m honored to have known Sidney, even if only a little bit. I’ve learned a lot from him, just by the way he moved in the world. (If there’s no Sidney, there’s no Denzel, Chadwick, Jeffery Wright, Cheadle, Omar Epps, Michael B, Michael K, and on and on!)

On 9/10/01, this was literally my view from the stage. Performing at The Garden for MJ’s 30th anniversary concert with MJ, his brothers, and every other artist on the show! ⠀

On 9/11/01, I had to get back to LA to make rehearsals for another special. My Delta flight took off around 8a.m. We never made it to California! (I’m working on a book for the rest of the story)⠀

I knew a few people personally who lost their lives that day. They worked in the building. I had been there many times. ⠀
⠀
I will never forget that day! I will also never forget that just for a moment after those events, Americans were more united than ever before. Maybe one day, we can get there again! M~

As we were working on the set list early on in the process of the show, MJ expressed to me that he wanted to do a medley of Jackson 5 hits. ⠀
⠀
I personally am not really a fan of medleys. They always feel lacking in some way. For this reason, I have a way in which I like to arrange medleys so the audience feels like it’s getting a reasonable portion of the songs they love! And, the artist can feel good about representing the songs that made them famous. ⠀

I asked MJ if I could do my own version of the songs he wanted in the show. And, I explained my medley philosophy. ⠀

As I was working on the medley, I took a moment to realize what had just happened. This man had been a superstar so long, I was arranging hit songs he sang as a boy! And, he sang them as if he were the age he was in that present moment. (50) If you listen to his performance on ‘who’s Lovin’ you?’, he was only 10 when he recorded that. But, you believe every word! Crazy! ⠀

As a music director for more than a few mega-stars , I’ve been able to watch up close and personal how so many great icons work. I’ve learned a lot of valuable things! The word genius is lofted around a lot. It doesn’t always apply. ⠀

In MJ’s case, he wasn’t just a genius because of his extraordinary gifts and talents from birth! Although that’s certainly true! MJ was a genius because, it was his intent! Everything he did was from the mindset of greatness. Everything we talked about. Everything we created. He always asked, “can this be better!” ⠀

That is one of many lessons I learned from MJ. So on this day, I hope this story inspires younger artists to above all else, pursue excellence! Because in the end, it’s truly the only way to achieve greatness. He asked me once, “do you know how you love forever?” I said how Mj? He said, “through your art!”⠀

But, I will share this one on what would’ve been MJ’s 65th birthday.🎉🕊⠀ ⠀ As we were working on the set list early on in the process of the show, MJ expressed to me that he wanted to do a medley of Jackson 5 hits. ⠀ ⠀ I personally am not really a fan of medleys. They always feel lacking in some way. For this reason, I have a way in which I like to arrange medleys so the audience feels like it’s getting a reasonable portion of the songs they love! And, the artist can feel good about representing the songs that made them famous. ⠀ ⠀ I asked MJ if I could do my own version of the songs he wanted in the show. I’m just devastated! 😥 Literally gut punched! The unexpectedness of it all. 💔⠀

After a while, we didn’t even notice the cameras rolling. It was just rehearsals to us. ⠀

I do remember this moment. It came from a conversation I had with MJ a few days before. I was telling him how much I enjoyed the song ‘Heartbreak Hotel’ by him and his brothers, and would he consider doing it for the show.⠀

He said he liked the song too but, would only do it if he thought it would add “production value” (his favorite saying to me at that time) to the show. ⠀

One day, I saw MJ sitting there with Kenny and just started jamming the song. Foot (drums) and Alex (bass) being the brilliant musicians they are, just jumped right in. ⠀

MJ sat there bobbing his head and feeling it. After that, we decided to put it in the show. MJ saw the “production value” and that was it! Just like that, In the show it went. ⠀

Caption : I was going to post another photo of me and MJ today (I’ve posted this one before) but, something I heard @realchriswebber say amidst the @nba boycott resonated with me. He said, you can’t be it until you see it! ⠀ As a young black boy growing up on the south side of Chicago, it was important for me to see someone that looked like me doing what I aspired to do. Image matters so much! ⠀ There’s no possible way I could’ve known I’d grow up to work with one who inspired me.
