I have many MJ stories I’m saving. But, I will share this one on what would’ve been MJ’s 65th birthday.🎉🕊⠀
⠀
As we were working on the set list early on in the process of the show, MJ expressed to me that he wanted to do a medley of Jackson 5 hits. ⠀
⠀
I personally am not really a fan of medleys. They always feel lacking in some way. For this reason, I have a way in which I like to arrange medleys so the audience feels like it’s getting a reasonable portion of the songs they love! And, the artist can feel good about representing the songs that made them famous. ⠀
⠀
I asked MJ if I could do my own version of the songs he wanted in the show. And, I explained my medley philosophy. ⠀
⠀
He said “go for it! But, I only have one request.” I asked him what it was. He said (with a grin), “please bring those keys down for me. I’m not 10 anymore.” I said, of course. You’ve got it! ⠀
⠀
As I was working on the medley, I took a moment to realize what had just happened. This man had been a superstar so long, I was arranging hit songs he sang as a boy! And, he sang them as if he were the age he was in that present moment. (50) If you listen to his performance on ‘who’s Lovin’ you?’, he was only 10 when he recorded that. But, you believe every word! Crazy! ⠀
⠀
As a music director for more than a few mega-stars , I’ve been able to watch up close and personal how so many great icons work. I’ve learned a lot of valuable things! The word genius is lofted around a lot. It doesn’t always apply. ⠀
⠀
In MJ’s case, he wasn’t just a genius because of his extraordinary gifts and talents from birth! Although that’s certainly true! MJ was a genius because, it was his intent! Everything he did was from the mindset of greatness. Everything we talked about. Everything we created. He always asked, “can this be better!” ⠀
⠀
That is one of many lessons I learned from MJ. So on this day, I hope this story inspires younger artists to above all else, pursue excellence! Because in the end, it’s truly the only way to achieve greatness. He asked me once, “do you know how you love forever?” I said how Mj? He said, “through your art!”⠀
⠀
In regards to him, He was right! M~ #MJForever⠀
HBD🎉 #Madonna. It’s rare I speak on my many years with her. (no real reason. I just rarely do) Before I lead MJ or J Lo or D’Angelo or Gaga and many others, there was this woman! ⠀
⠀
I Learned a lot as her music director over the many years we created together. Grateful! Her work ethic was incredible! Too many memories to post here. Oh the stories I could tell. . Enjoy your born day Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone! (I always used to like to use all her given names. ☺️) ⠀
⠀
(Side note: so many of the artists I worked with were born in August. Madonna, Whitney, Jennifer Lopez, MJ. Not sure what that means with my attraction but, it’s an interesting coincidence) ⠀

I first met Tony in London many years ago when I was working with Liza Minelli. After one of the shows at Royal Albert Hall, Tony came backstage. ⠀
⠀
The crazy thing to me was, he came directly over to me to tell me how much he enjoyed my piano playing. He said, “you really know how to follow a singer young man.” My mouth on the floor, I was like, “thank you Mr. Bennett!” I was still so young in the business at that time. ⠀
⠀
I ended up talking to him for a bit that night. Just about music and stuff. ⠀
⠀
After that first meeting, I had the pleasure of seeing Tony and, working with him a few times on various shows and events. He was always class personified. ⠀
⠀
Towards his final days, I was honored to have been the music director and conductor, for his last ever public musical performance at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. ⠀
⠀
As his health was deteriorating, I was most insistent that we try to make Tony’s final bows on the concert stage a memorable one. I really wanted it to be as grand as possible, to match the stature of Tony’s amazing life and career! ⠀
⠀
Although it was difficult emotionally because of his health, I was so grateful that thee Lady trusted me and agreed to the show. They were both magnificent! It was magical!
⠀
After the show, I walked over to Mr. Bennet and his wife to thank him and say good show. He did not say my name, but he walked very close to my face, he always smiled when he saw me, looked me directly in the eyes and said, “we did good huh?” 😢 Yes! Mr, Bennett. We did good! ⠀
⠀
I will never forget that for the rest of my days!⠀
⠀
There are not enough superlatives to describe the enormity of Tony Bennet! He was an extraordinary human being on many levels. And, not just music. I am forever grateful to have known such a person in my life time. ⠀
⠀
We still have the music! Rest well Mr. Bennett. Yours was a life well lived! M~ 🕊🙏🏾
I’ve written before on how much Nip (Whitney Houston) meant to my life and career. ⠀
⠀
Nip changed my life forever! In fact, she probably saved my life! (that’s a longer story not for this time.) ⠀
⠀
Nip would’ve been 60 years old today. It’s hard to believe she’s no longer here! I’m so honored to have had the years I had with her while she was here. ⠀
⠀
She was, with no debate, the greatest anointed singer I’ve worked with in my long career! Her gift could move souls, in any way she chose! ⠀
⠀
HBD 🕊🙏🏾 Nip! You are missed and loved! We still have the music. M~ #WhitneyHouston

Today, an entertainment, and civil rights colossus has passed! Harry Belafonte is Legendary! Iconic! Trailblazing! Also, I’m honored to be able to call Harry, a dear friend. ⠀
⠀
Harry was someone who would call out of the blue, to check in, but also to discuss important issues of the day. Especially, issues pertaining to oppressed peoples. ⠀
⠀
I still have voicemails of tasks, strategies, and even praise for something I did that he thought was great. Priceless! I may share one day. Just, not today. ⠀
⠀
One of my favorite calls from Mr.B (a moniker we affectionately used for him) was him asking if I would MD his 93rd birthday party at the Apollo. Of course I accepted without hesitation! What a night it was!⠀
⠀
A social media post could in no way accurately depict the true depth of greatness and influence of such an iconic career and life! ⠀
⠀
But, what it can do is to shine just a little light on our shared, fragile existence, and the extraordinary human beings who dedicate their lives to the betterment of humanity! ⠀
⠀
Rest well Mr.B! 🕊You will be missed! 🙏🏾 M~ #HarryBelafonte⠀

So heartbreaking to hear that one of my earliest music mentors has passed away! ⠀
⠀
Some of you may not know who he was but, Ramsey Lewis was a jazz legend and a HUGE influence on my life! In general, as well as music!⠀
⠀
I spent more than a few weekends at his home as a kid. I learned so much about piano and how to navigate the music business. And, just about life in general!⠀
⠀
Ram was the epitome of class, dignity, grace and just overall elegance! Greatness! ⠀
⠀
I think the main thing I learned from Ram was, musical patience! That comes in many forms. It’s the lesson I needed to learn. And, it has served me well in my long career. ⠀
⠀
I already know he was proud of me, because he told me himself. I’ll hold onto that dearly!🙏🏾
⠀
Healing energy to his family and all who loved him. I’m sad and gutted! 😞💔 But, so honored to have known him in my lifetime.⠀
⠀

I’ve had an amazingly blessed life! I’m truly honored to have some of the most amazing, and iconic people guide me in my life too! ⠀
⠀
Clarence Avant, (affectionately known as the ‘Black Godfather’) was one of those iconic human beings in my life. He passed away today at 92 years old. 💔⠀
⠀
Although it’s a sad day for me and all those who loved him, if you knew Clarence, you know that he wouldn’t want anyone to be sad. As a matter of fact, he’s said to his friends and loved ones, “when I go, it better not be MF’ing sad!” ☺️⠀
⠀
So in his honor, I will embrace the joy of having known such an extraordinary human being personally. Everyone needs help and guidance, I feel so lucky to have been one of the ones who could go to lunch with Clarence and ask any question(s) I wanted. And, he’d answer every single one! He’s helped me navigate this crazy business we’re in. I learned so much from him. And, for that, I will forever be grateful! ⠀
⠀
Now it’s time to continue his legacy and apply every thing I’ve learned! Thank you for everything Clarence. You will be missed. You are loved! M~ 🙏🏾🕊
