Caption : 💒🔪🫀💍 и умерли в один день x @vegsurfer @nytimes 📝: Nathan Monk, a priest who left the Russian Orthodox Church because he did not support its stance on gay marriage, led a ceremony. Ms. Tolokonnikova’s daughter @gerariot made the party’s playlist, which featured Soviet pop and contemporary Russian trap. For food, Ms. Tolokonnikova suggested serving pickles and vodka, but Mr. Caldwell insisted on something more robust. Ms. Tolokonnikova baked a large vegan Napoleon cake, dyed it black and assembled it in the shape of a cross, a symbol she uses often in her artwork. The dress code was “gopnik,” a word that encapsulates a style of dress, music and art reflecting the working class in the former Soviet states in the 1980s and 1990s. Guests showed up in tracksuits, house slippers, Adidas slides and newsboy caps, and one brought an accordion. Photos: @thecobrasnake Article: @vsaffron Priest: @fathernathan

Caption : This art is a hammer that shapes reality. 2023, series of 23 works. “Humor was another of the soul’s weapons in the fight for self-preservation. It is well known that humor can afford an aloofness and an ability to rise above any situation, even if only for a few seconds” – Viktor Frankl, Man’s search for meaning. I incorporate needles and sewing machine parts – they represent my experiences of forced labor in the camp. During that time, I would have dreams of receiving new sets of needles and machine parts, only to wake up to the harsh reality of continuing to sew on old, unsafe equipment. I endured injuries and excruciating pain while sewing, including a traumatic incident where a needle penetrated my finger and caused profuse bleeding, yet I was compelled to persist without proper medical care. The use of red splashes in my artwork represents the blood that stained my worktable at the factory. I incorporate teddy bears into my work, penetrating them with needles and presenting them as worn and dirty. The teddy bears encapsulate the innocence and vulnerability I once possessed, now marred and broken by the oppressive forces at play.

Caption : 💍🔪🫀 american boy уеду с тобой @voguemagazine 📝: Sewing used to be a source of trauma for Pussy Riot’s Nadya Tolokonnikova, who was forced to stitch military and police uniforms while in a Russian penal colony. But she decided to reclaim the activity when she sewed Adidas stripes onto her now-husband John Caldwell’s suit jacket, for their wedding on 12 January. “Now I feel like I can sew again without being necessarily connected to the traumatic experience,” she says. “It broke the chain of trauma.” She wanted to create contrast between the “cute” side of her personality with the “gopnik” side. Tolokonnikova, who is vegan, juxtaposed her sweet look with an oversized black faux-leather Adidas jacket. She also wore a pair of velvet Doc Martens, though she changed into slides from—you guessed it—Adidas during the party. Tolokonnikova also included the Orthodox cross in her ceremony: on a necklace, garter belt, and even the vegan Napoleon cake covered in black icing, which she baked herself. “I’m almost trying to steal [the symbol] from the Orthodox Christianity, honestly, because they stole two years of my life,” she says. “I was accused—besides going against Putin—of religious hatred, which I didn’t have. But they still accused me of it. So I was like, Well, I’m just going to be using your symbol and reclaim it as my own.” She and Caldwell were married by Father Nathan Monk, who was excommunicated from the Russian Orthodox church for his support of the LGBTQ+ community, underneath a giant neon Orthodox cross. PROTEST ART ACTION: REPLACING PRICE TAGS IN THE SUPERMARKET WITH ANTI-WAR SLOGANS. One of the tags displayed the facts about the Russian army bombing a theatre in the port city of Mariupol where around 400 people were hiding. Sasha is jailed for 1,5 years already. Sasha suffers from congenital heart disease, PTSD, and celiac disease (no medical help in jail). Her 8 years sentence could turn into a death sentence. “LOVE IS STRONGER THAN WAR AND DEATH” – says Sasha’s postcard that we brought to the Russian embassy in London. These words sound even stronger today, as we wish and hope for love and peace in Ukraine, Israel, Palestine, Artsakh. The police tried to detain us for performing the action, but we ran. Transcranial magnetic stimulation works via changing magnetic field that induces an electric current at a specific area of the brain. It awakens areas of the brain paralyzed by depression and brings back energy and motivation. No, it’s not electro-convulsive therapy, and it’s not lobotomy either. It’s my second course of TMS, I did another one a year ago. I had otherworldly results. Once again, like before jail time, I became focused, organized, motivated, and my horizons of what’s possible opened up again, I was as good as new, like I was never mentally broken by the penal colony. I’m prone to headaches, so I got bad headaches last time for side effects, which is normal, but, subjectively, not ideal. My doctor recommended me to get the second course a few months after the first one to cement the results, but I was lazy and said no ty I’m fine. And then I slipped into depression and crawled back 🎪💉🩸 Currently I’m scoring sky high on the PTSD scale, I can’t stop crying when I think of my failed attempts to fix my country, and feel like my life is totally ruined by it. They say that the second course of treatments hits harder and really helps 🩸 Amen.

Caption : I’m working on a little memoir that covers 1989-2014, and the memoir is being turned into a TV series. Much broader than Pussy Riot’s history, my notes are dedicated to my very personal Russia – queer, quirky, kind, creative, idealistic – the one that lives in exile, jails or closets today. We’ve lost some battles, but we still exist. Why Now? My message is the same now as it always was – Putin is a dangerous and morally bankrupt man. He and his supporters must be treated as such. We’ve seen heinous acts of violence in Ukraine, but bipartisan support in the west has slipped into the more of “it’s complicated”. It is not complicated, he must be stopped. I was only twenty-years-old and a broke philosophy student, but I thought it’s a good idea to speak up. I’ll speak up now, while my friends are being bombed, imprisoned, poisoned by this pathetic dictator – and I hope to bring this clarity with my story. I don’t want to paint some picture like we were special, I want to inspire anyone to speak up for what is right, even if the consequences are not so nice. Why Sophie Watts? Sophie is a powerhouse and doesn’t back down from challenges. My story is inherently political, that can be a bad word in America, but she has shown no hesitation. Also Sophie is a proud, openly gay woman. A little bonus fuck you to Russia’s anti-extremist law that just went into effect. While gay bars are being raided in Moscow, here I have a chance to work with an openly gay woman who can help me bring a megaphone to my story. Though Putin is still in power, his plans to silence us keep backfiring.

Caption : PUSSY RIOT STORMS INDIANA SUPREME COURT: “GOD SAVE AB*RTION” Indiana was the first state to outlaw most ab*rtions after Roe v Wade was overturned. The state supreme courts have become the hand and uncontested voice of god, we protest this by paying homage to Martin Luther and delivering our theses – starting with Thesis №1, GOD SAVE ABORTI*N. OUR DEMANDS: 1. We demand the separation church and state 2. We demand access to LEGAL and SAFE abortion for every person in the United States. 3. We demand limitations of government control over our bodies 4. We demand a Pussy Riot representative to be appointed as an official advisor to each state’s supreme court, as experts on bodily autonomy 💒💖 ••• Российские консерваторы всегда перенимают все самое худшее, что можно перенять из практики других стран: вслед за ликвидацией права на аб*рт на федеральном уровне в США и почти тотальным запретом аб*ртов в консервативных штатах, патриарх Кирилл потребовал запретить аборты в частных клиниках РФ.

STORM OF THE WHITE HOUSE / ШТУРМ БЕЛОГО ДОМА: art action by Voina group, Moscow, 2008 Voina, art collective that I co-founded, brought a large laser projector into the attic room of a hotel “Ukraine” located across the street from the Russian White house. From there we projected a 40 x 40 meters image of a skull and bones on the white house. Other group members on the ground then stormed the building gates and successfully entered the secure zone in front of the building. After holding ground and destroying a piece of video surveillance activists left the White House unharmed, with stunned federal troopers unable to catch up with the speed of the Voina attack, appearing minutes later.
