Pussy Riot won the court case against russia in the European Court of Human Rights. russia is to pay us $100,000 – which russia won’t do, but it’s still cute when you get to win over the ter*orist state. In 2014 we were whipped, pepper-sprayed, beaten, detained, dragged by our hair during Sochi Olympics. We came to Sochi to protest corruption, crackdown of the independent media, and to demand the release of all political prisoners in russia. russia has failed to pay judgements from the court on other matters, making it unlikely that it will pay the damages this time. Following its invasion of Ukraine, russia was expelled from the Council of Europe, which oversees the court. thank you Agora, Pasha Chikov, Natasha Dobreva for being the best lawyers on the planet Earth. This art is a hammer that shapes reality (series) 🩸🔨 2023 The text is printed on fabric. I use textile because traditionally it was labeled as low art/crafts, female work – and because I was forced to work with textile in my penal colony. The fabric is stapled to canvas, and pink and white fur is stapled to canvas as well. I use pins, needles, and parts of the sewing machine in this series, finally fulfilling my prison dreams about getting new sets of needles – now I’m a free person and can just order them online, it was a big pleasure ordering them! “We can’t give you new needles and parts to fix your machine, did you forget where you are? You’re in RUSSIA” – I was told in prison when I asked to fix my equipment. Splashes of acrylic paint on the fabric are reminiscent of my blood getting spilled on police and military uniforms that I was sewing in prison, injured by old and outdated equipment. For more solid red paint coverage – like in “This art screams in pain” piece – I used red spray paint, a tool that was widely used in my activist anarchist youth. Teddy bears are penetrated with needles like my fingers used to be when I was sewing in prison, teddy bears are covered in Putin’s Ashes – I saved a bucket of ashes after the performance in August 2022 and now use it as art material. I combine cute and dangerous, playful and serious in this series, just like we did in our name, Pussy Riot. The harsh statements are combined with plush toys and faux fur 💣🐁 Once Marina Abramovic asked me why I like baby pink so much, she hates baby pink. I said that I want to look cute when cops are arresting me, I want them to look stupid. She said, ok, you’re the only person I can accept wearing baby pink and hello kitty backpacks. Putin did not just strip me away from my freedom and mental health, he stole my identity. I don’t know what it means to be a person from Russia anymore. I used to be proud of being russian, now i’m ashamed. I’m eternally saddened that we were not effective enough, that we did not get rid of Putin before it’s too late. My homeland is stolen from me and I don’t have an identity anymore, but, unlike many other friends of mine, I still have the privilege of being alive. My brave colleague, anti-Putin activist Kara-Murza, who was sentenced earlier this year for 25 years in a penal colony for publicly denouncing Putin and the war in Ukraine, said in his closing statement: “I know that the day will come when the darkness engulfing our country will dissipate, this day will come as inevitably as spring comes to replace even the frostiest winter.” @pennystampsseries hosted the event, more about the Penny Stamps Speaker Series visit pennystampsevents.org Thank you @umstamps @umicharts and Chrisstina Hamilton for this great conversation 🖤💒🥷 🏆🎞️🙇♀️ Our short film with @judy.chicago – What If Women Ruled The World? – is getting sooo many awards and great reviews its WOW 😳 🏆 “Best Experimental Documentary”, at Doc.Boston Documentary Festival 🏆 “Best Italian Cinema Now”, at Venice Film Week The film, which was produced by @shiftingvision_, directed by @giuliamagno_, and in partnership with @dminti.io, has also been screened at: -The Visions du Reel Film Market Flickers’ Rhode Island International Film Festival -The Norwegian Short Film Festival The São Paulo International Short Film Festival.
