Caption : ABC Radio Melbourne presenter Virginia Trioli has announced she will be stepping away from talkback radio for a new position hosting an arts television program. Trioli will finish up on Friday September 15th ahead of the launch of a new high-profile arts interview series, which will broadcast on ABC TV in 2024. Trioli, who has also filled in as a presenter on Q&A in recent months, said she came to the decision to leave radio after a short break from broadcasting earlier this year. “The time has come after decades of working to the hardest alarms that the ABC has to offer on News Breakfast and on Mornings,” she said. “And with my family needing a little bit more from me, now is the time to work and live a little differently.” She took on the role as Mornings presenter in 2019 when Jon Faine stepped down, in what she said was a difficult time for Melbourne. “I started just as bushfire smoke filled our city, we then headed into the dreadful Black Summer fires and then straight into COVID,” she said. “It’s been an honour and a privilege to be here with the audience through some of the years that the city of Melbourne has gone through.” #virginiatrioli #abcradiomelbourne #abc #radio

Caption : A few words from me … Before I returned to work in April, after my long break over summer, I informed my managers here at ABC Radio Melbourne that I needed to step down from the position of presenting Mornings on this station. And I will do that on Friday September 15 – almost exactly four years to the day that I took on this role. Instead, I have been incredibly lucky to be asked by the ABC to move to television, to present a new prime time arts show for ABC TV in 2024. After a difficult period of dealing with multiple illnesses in my family, and with the realisation that you’re lucky if you get EVEN ONE warning about how long you have on this earth with the people you love, I now find myself at that stage of life that requires me to live and work in a different way. And after almost 20 years of working to the hardest alarms that the ABC has to offer – presenting Mornings on ABC Radio Sydney, 11 years as the founding anchor of News Breakfast, and on Melbourne mornings here – it’s a change that feels unavoidable for me right now. When I was offered this position, I did not hesitate to say yes – both because of my deep love of radio and this ABC Melbourne audience, and also because of my commitment to the task of holding those in power to account. That hasn’t always made me many friends with those in power. But that goes way back with me … I was never going to be any different! I have many many thanks to make – but they can come later. Right now — I want to thank you, the listeners. We have been through a great deal. Fires and pandemic and floods and a cost of living crisis that is re-shaping our understanding of what is possible for us and our families in Australia. Some of our years together in Melbourne have been very very hard indeed. And only you and I will ever know what being here for each other day after day has been like over the last four years. Don’t ever let anyone try to tell you what that was, and what that was like. We lived it. We know it. Caption : I remember every single concert I’ve ever been to, and I remember everyone who ever took me. And the privilege of watching this phenomenal performer with my close friend’s daughter – her first ever stadium concert for an artist she adores – was moving beyond words. It wasn’t just the incredible crowds, though they were exceptional: I’ve never experienced a more affectionate, kindly and celebratory crowd anywhere else, with girls and women looking out for each other, handing over their bracelets, moving to one side so everyone could see, adoring the music together. And it wasn’t just the music and the staging although that was something else: three nights of 3.5 hours of that powerhouse music and she sounded like that? She’s a machine: a feeling, thinking one who is her generation’s Joni Mitchell – and any Boomer who has a problem with that comparison, well you must not have been there. And it wasn’t just that my city does Big Event mode so well – any other city would have been as full of fun. I think it was so special because I was part of a moment, particularly but not only, for a younger generation that has found its poet laureate, and she sings to them with so much commitment and joy, she helps them find their own path to articulate truth. That happens so very rarely, even in a concert like this. It was an incredible lineup and became an incendiary, transporting night under the spring moon and it was the last time I saw this brilliant, angry, joyous and sad woman sing. Each of the artists chose songs to covet, songs to share, songs of their own. Rickie Lee sang Gangsters Paradise, a performance I’ll never forget, and Sinead blew us away with War, Serve Somebody and Nothing Compares 2 U. Today comes with such sad news but I don’t want to remember the trauma and sorrows today, I want to remember a woman with a voice like wind through a forest: otherworldly and beautiful. Caption : Right to the end, it’s been a show brave enough to take us into the heart of family darkness, framed always by trauma and neglect, choked with dark laughter and lifted by translucent performances. Yet again, you start the episode, and then you don’t exhale til it’s over. The final episode of @succession never missed. All the grand themes were there – the missing father, the dreadful mother, the sibling rivalry, vanity, ego, hurt, pathos and bathos. Perfect. The little touches in this final episode were splendid too: Greg and the original cowbell he knocked off the table when he visited Logan’s apartment in the very first episode; Lady Caroline luring her children to Barbados not to support Roman, but so her grifter upper-class twit husband could try and con them into a barely legal investment; the torture of watching Shiv, Roman and Kendall come together in the kitchen in genuine joy and play, all the while knowing this communion could not possibly last; the video of Logan singing Irish ballads with his eldest son and the hangers-on, while the three kids watch – excluded, ignorant of this fun, so far from his company. What did Shiv say? “It was so warm in the light.” In the end, Logan won. As he said, he always wins. And the win was the most awful one of all, because the patriarch’s success depended on his children never being raised with the maturity, independence and capacity to ever take him on and beat him. None of the kids were ever going to get the prize, and in the end it doesn’t really matter that Tom does (he’ll be canned by Matsson eventually) but the decision now permanently sets the course for the kids that was originally charted by their brutal parents: Shiv to become her mother as Logan-lite Tom eventually shrugs her off for a newer model; Roman to descend into lonely nihilism (still pining for Gerry with her drink of choice) and poor Kendall, with little more than billions to help him make sense of a world that has now forever shrunk to the size of his eternal childhood fears. What an epic bit of TV. @succession @streamonmax

Caption : Retracing our footsteps, continued. On one of our many trips over three years of Russell living in Japan, we took the train in November 1997 to this remote, strangely gloomy but spectacular onsen in the mountains. It started snowing as we arrived, and we bathed in the hot volcanic waters under the stars and snow, hardly able to believe it was real. The food was ok then – but is now much improved. Mixed naked bathing – which was always a bit of a challenge, to be honest – is now modestly covered – but everything else was untouched and exactly the same. The river roars by you as you soak. It’s a dream. Back then I could take photos in the outside pools – today that’s strictly forbidden. The beautiful manager was astonished to learn we’d been there so many years ago, and told us that Covid had been incredibly tough, and that life still was, but she said if people kept coming back like we had then they might survive. Our son has told us he’ll never forget it. #japan #onsen ##memories #virginiatrioli

Caption : A sad, short Tokyo owl cafe story. Animal cafe experiences are a big part of Tokyo popular culture: Shiba Inu dogs, hedgehogs and owls, etc. We had a gorgeous morning at a Shiba cafe, where these imperious, aloof dogs allowed – or didn’t allow – themselves to be patted. It was clean, well run and the dogs were not over stressed. The owl cafe, while obviously run by caring, loving owners, was very different. I will admit I was worried about the owl visit from the start – but my son is a huge lover of animals and wanted to try. The incredibly small room was filled with owls who had their legs tethered, some crouching beneath benches as they were “trained”, and others – in the enclosed balcony room you can see here – looking out onto the glorious trees of the Meiji Shrine park. They stared at those trees fixedly. We found the scene heartbreaking. It’s one thing to have a room of calm, domesticated house dogs, but these are wild, hunting predators who cannot fly more than a couple of flaps, and flinch every time someone pats them. We lasted ten minutes and left. The owners were confused and upset at our early departure, but we barely made it out to the lift before my son and I burst into tears and sobbed at the experience. I’m sure there will be many here who tell us we are applying the wrong cultural lens – but I have never liked birds in cages. #tokyo #japan #animalrights
