I remember every single concert I’ve ever been to, and I remember everyone who ever took me. And the privilege of watching this phenomenal performer with my close friend’s daughter – her first ever stadium concert for an artist she adores – was moving beyond words.
It wasn’t just the incredible crowds, though they were exceptional: I’ve never experienced a more affectionate, kindly and celebratory crowd anywhere else, with girls and women looking out for each other, handing over their bracelets, moving to one side so everyone could see, adoring the music together.
And it wasn’t just the music and the staging although that was something else: three nights of 3.5 hours of that powerhouse music and she sounded like that? She’s a machine: a feeling, thinking one who is her generation’s Joni Mitchell – and any Boomer who has a problem with that comparison, well you must not have been there.
And it wasn’t just that my city does Big Event mode so well – any other city would have been as full of fun.
I think it was so special because I was part of a moment, particularly but not only, for a younger generation that has found its poet laureate, and she sings to them with so much commitment and joy, she helps them find their own path to articulate truth. That happens so very rarely, even in a concert like this.

Mother’s Day made in a most unexpected way: this painting popped up in my feed, one of the impressionist Edouard Manet’s final paintings on view in NY now, and it’s almost impossible to express how deeply thrilling and exhilarating it is to see this flair, ease, delight and beauty in painting: look at the brush strokes!! Zoom in and look! As my friend the painter @stiegpersson says, the brush stokes are almost contemptuous: Manet makes a series of very tricky choices look so easy. Amazing. People go to stare at the Mona Lisa – I could stare at this luminous work all day. This is the most exceptional Mothers Day bouquet I could ever receive, and I’ll take it thank you.
