This little boy survived brutal bullying, cruelty, being beaten, egged, discrimination, anti LGBTQ laws, the AIDS crisis, the fight for marriage equality, alcoholism and severe depression. This little boy just wanted to be safe and happy and sing and dance and have friends. And once this little boy came out, a whole world opened to him. He found his creative voice, he sang and danced, and he had a whole community and family of loving friends. He was a part of making hundreds of movies and tv shows and plays, he produced the freaking Oscars. And all because he jumped off the scariest cliff of all and became his true self, out loud, and out in the open. He came out and said I’m me and I’m worth living and I’m worth loving. Yea, this little boy is me, and the journey has not always been easy (often it’s been difficult in ways no one would wish on that sweet little boy) but here I am. Proud of the man that kid became no matter how many people wanted him gone not because of who he was / is, but because of “what” he was / is. Well, what I am, is a person. A human being. A brother, a son, a friend, a romantic partner, a collaborator, a colleague, a director, a producer, a dancer, and A JEW, and I’m GAY AF. Please, come out of the dark and into the light and join me in being who you truly are, and let’s just do the work we can to make this a better world. It all starts with us. 10 years ago my life was falling apart. 10 years ago I was hiding and isolating 10 years ago what was once fun, was no longer fun: it was killing me. 10 years ago I looked so bad I shocked myself when I saw myself in a mirror. 10 years ago I was living the same useless stagnant night over and over again. 10 years ago my how was virtually extinguished. And 10 years ago, I chose to live. 10 years ago I sought help because I didn’t want to fade into nothingness and die a waste. 10 years ago I found love in a community of people who just wanted to do better. To be better. To create and thrive. 10 years ago I started to respect myself and found love and compassion. 10 years ago I stopped feeling shame, having secrets, losing days, and making excuses. 10 years I weirdly did find love in a hopeless place: in me. To all who helped me find my life again, thank you. Here’s to being fun again, and working to fill the world with joy best I can by being the best I can be.
