To get why watching my son wrestle makes me emotional, you’d have to know a little about my amazing son. He’s a very high energy kid. Always on the move, playing, jumping, running, torturing his sisters 😂, very smart academically but has trouble focusing in a classroom setting. But when he’s wrestling, he displays this laser focus that I’ve never seen out of him before. It’s inspiring to watch. He takes that same non stop energy and uses it in his matches. He never stops moving, never stops attacking and just breaks down every opponent he has. I was apprehensive about letting him compete this young because most kids that start out this young don’t stick with the sport. But one day I took him to watch a couple of our other youth members compete in Jiu Jitsu and he begged me to let him compete. So we upped the training. At first I sucked at coaching my son. Too many expectations and coming down on him too hard for his mistakes in practice. The first 2 practices ended in tears, then he said something to me that made me snap out of it. With tears in his eyes “you told me you had to practice a lot for a long time to get good and I’m gonna have to do the same.” If I had been standing by a brick wall when he told me that I would’ve put my head through it. But I needed to hear that. So from then on out practice was about having fun and making mistakes so he can fix them and get better. 100% encouragement. And since that day he has been having amazing practices and he’s been competing even better. This kid is a gamer at 8 years old. 1st place in both of his tournaments.
