Simone Moro Instagram – Fifteen years ago today: the first ever winter ascent on Makalu.
It was the lighter firstwinter ascent on an 8000-meter peak in history: the two-member expedition set up two camps and made only two rotations on the mountain before reaching the summit on February 9, 2009, after 29 years of attempts by the world’s best mountaineers. A privilege and fortune shared with my partner and friend Denis Urubko. This became my second absolute first winter ascent, and I did not yet know that two more would come in the following years.
