Jane Goodall Instagram – 🦮🐾 These canines are helping us sniff out illegal wildlife trade!
The Jane Goodall Institute’s Canine Detection Unit is part of a “triangle approach” that JGI staff at Tchimpounga Sanctuary use to address this threat. In addition to best-in-class captive animal welfare, and community outreach and education, working with local law enforcement helps us keep our sanctuary inhabitants and surrounding wildlife safe. JGI canine trainers teach these dogs to identify evidence of illegal wildlife crime and other dangerous/illegal items, utilizing their incredible heightened sense of smell.
We are always working to improve our training methods to combat wildlife trafficking! In 2023, a new scent was introduced to this powerful team: the gray parrot. This is an increasingly exploited species often transported in closed containers. By the end of the year three of the four dogs mastered the skill of detecting parrot feathers! 🦜🪶
