Dr. Jane Goodall’s insights into animal behavior have helped pave the way for transformations in animal welfare and research the world over. But #DidYouKnow that Jane didn’t begin her formal advocacy work until 1986? That year, she attended the first “Understanding Chimpanzees” conference in Chicago, IL and now often says, “I went to the conference as a scientist, and I left as an activist. I knew I had to do something.” 📢🌍
This sparked decades of advocacy work, including a collaborative effort to help successfully remove chimpanzees from medical research. In 2002, Jane was named a @unitednations Messenger of Peace by Secretary-General Kofi Annan for her years of dedicated activism and commitment to peace, particularly through @rootsandshoots , youth action program of the Jane Goodall Institute.
Today, Jane travels 300 days out of the year to spread her message of hope through action, and she takes every opportunity to support important conservation causes. Recently, inspired to take action against the harmful effects of some mining processes on communities and ecosystems, she’s partnered with @brilliantearth to support their use of ethically-sourced fine jewelry. 🦮🐾 These canines are helping us sniff out illegal wildlife trade!
The Jane Goodall Institute’s Canine Detection Unit is part of a “triangle approach” that JGI staff at Tchimpounga Sanctuary use to address this threat. In addition to best-in-class captive animal welfare, and community outreach and education, working with local law enforcement helps us keep our sanctuary inhabitants and surrounding wildlife safe. JGI canine trainers teach these dogs to identify evidence of illegal wildlife crime and other dangerous/illegal items, utilizing their incredible heightened sense of smell.
We are always working to improve our training methods to combat wildlife trafficking! In 2023, a new scent was introduced to this powerful team: the gray parrot. This is an increasingly exploited species often transported in closed containers. By the end of the year three of the four dogs mastered the skill of detecting parrot feathers! 🦜🪶

🦇 Happy Bat Appreciation Day! 🌿 Local folklore often portrays bats as guardians of the forest, with their nocturnal presence representing a connection to the spirit world. A real hero to their local ecosystems, they might be even better than Batman! Learn more about their various roles:
🌼 Pollination Powerhouses: Bats are key pollinators for many plants native to Gombe, ensuring the continued growth of our diverse flora.
🌱Seed Sowers: By feasting on fruits and dispersing seeds, bats contribute to the regeneration and richness of our forest’s vegetation.
🍴Natural Pest Managers: With their voracious appetite for insects, bats help control pest populations, preserving the delicate balance of Gombe’s ecosystem.
📈Ecosystem Barometers: Changes in bat populations serve as indicators of the forest’s health, alerting us to environmental shifts that may affect other species.
Let’s give a round of applause for these winged superheroes! 🦸♂️🌟
