With great sadness, the Jane Goodall Institute confirmed this morning the passing of the organization’s founder, Dr. Jane Goodall, age 91 who died peacefully in her sleep while in Los Angeles, CA for her speaking tour in the United States. Dr. Goodall’s life and work not only made an indelible mark on our understanding of chimpanzees and other species, but also of humankind and the environments we all share. She inspired curiosity, hope and compassion in countless people around the world, and paved the way for many others — particularly young people who gave her hope for the future. In 1960 Dr. Goodall established the longest running wild chimpanzee study in Gombe National Park, Tanzania which continues to this day. She pioneered and sustained the Jane Goodall Institute’s community-centered conservation initiatives across the chimpanzee range for over four decades. Her legacy includes the creation of JGI’s international environmental and humanitarian youth program Roots & Shoots, which is actively driving change in 75 countries and counting around the world. You may recognize this extraordinary moment, when a chimpanzee named Wounda embraced Dr. Jane Goodall. 💚 What the world saw was a brief exchange of trust and gratitude. What came before it was years of care, compassion, and recovery. When Wounda arrived at the Jane Goodall Institute’s Tchimpounga Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Center in the Republic of the Congo, she was gravely ill. She was so weak her name in Lingala means “close to dying.” Like so many orphaned chimpanzees, she was rescued after her mother was killed in the illegal bushmeat trade. Tchimpounga, founded by the Jane Goodall Institute in 1992, is now the largest chimpanzee sanctuary in Africa. It provides lifelong care to chimpanzees rescued from the illegal wildlife trade and serves as a model for conservation, education, and animal welfare across the region. The sanctuary includes a veterinary clinic, nursery, and expansive forest island habitats where rehabilitated chimpanzees can live freely and safely, forming new families and rediscovering what it means to be wild. Under the dedicated care of Dr. Rebeca Atencia and her team, Wounda slowly regained her strength and spirit. When she was finally ready, she was transferred to one of these protected forested islands. She found a new home where she could roam, climb, and thrive among her kind. 🌱✨ A truly inspiring day with Dr. Jane Goodall at Pasadena High School! Speaking to a full auditorium of 1,500 people, Dr. Goodall shared a heartfelt message of hope, resilience, and the power of coming together in difficult times—offering encouragement in the aftermath of the Eaton and Palisades fires. Hosted by the Pasadena Educational Foundation, Pasadena Unified School District, and our very own #RootsandShootsLA Basecamp, the event was a moving tribute to the firefighters, animal rescuers, and community members who showed incredible courage and compassion. 💚👏 Jane reminded us that out of tragedy can come unity—and that each of us can make a meaningful difference for people, animals, and the planet. 🌍🐾 Before the lecture, local Roots & Shoots groups (including @uhs_rootsandshoots) and community partners showcased their inspiring projects, sparking connection and action. We were also joined by incredible youth activists and influencers, including @greengirlleah (Leah Thomas), @diandramarizet (Diandra Marizet), @iam_samata (Samata Pattinson), @climatediva (Summer Dean), @imkevinjpatel (Kevin Patel), and @browngirl_green (Kristy Drutman), who are all doing amazing work to shape a brighter future. 💫 We’re so grateful to everyone who joined us! From Clinging to Climbing: A Primate Lesson? 🐵🍼 Chimpanzees are among the most altricial species in the animal kingdom — meaning they are born highly dependent on their mothers for survival. A newborn chimpanzee clings to its mother’s body for months, nurses for about five years, and continues to learn from her for at least a decade. Even as juveniles, chimps stay close to their mothers, relying on her for comfort, protection, and essential survival skills like tool use and foraging techniques. This level of dependence contrasts with precocial species, like wildebeests or giraffes, whose young can walk and follow their mothers within hours of birth. In evolutionary terms, highly intelligent and social animals — such as chimpanzees and humans — tend to have prolonged childhoods, allowing time for critical learning and social development. Decades of continuous research have given Gombe researchers a firsthand look at these intricate bonds between chimpanzee mothers and their infants. We were so thrilled to have NINE Roots & Shoots Youth Council members at Jane’s recent event in Baltimore! 🤩🌿 What’s #RSYouthCouncil , you ask? Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots Youth Council USA (RSYC) brings together inspiring young people from across the USA who are dedicated to making positive change happen in their communities. With projects ranging from pond ecology to education access, each youth leader on the council brings different passions to the table, as well as different experiences to learn from. 🌱💚 For example, RSYC member Joshua (shown here with Jane both this year and ten years ago, when they first met) is combating economic disparities through impactful community service. His primary project is addressing diaper poverty, having successfully lobbied to eliminate the diaper tax in Maryland and saving families $12 million annually! 🧷👶 He also leads pop-up pantry initiatives at a local church, providing essential items to underserved families.
