I was about 10 years old, riding down the streets of Chicago in our family car. I had an unforgettable conversation that day with my mom. I decided to tell her my future plans. I said that I was going to be a singer like Whitney Houston, and I wasn’t going to college.
My mom was big on education, so that statement didn’t land without her challenging it. However, on this day, she felt a seriousness in my approach. She later told me that I looked at her, with conviction, and asked… “Mom, what can you do for me?” That was it, so she decided to bargain with me. She suggested that if I didn’t see success or make money from this by the time I finished high school, that I would then go to college. I agreed. 👀
No matter the pivotal bumps in the road that I’ve encountered over the years while going after the thing I desired, here I am today, still Thank God, doing what I love for a living.
There’s power in innocence and belief; when you’re not hammered with the stress of life’s biggest lessons just yet, and trusting things can happen for you. And there’s also power in resilience and perseverance; when you’ve been adulting for some time, not sure how to sustain the push for your dream, yet willing to still create success for yourself in spite of.
Through experience, trial and error, falling down and getting up, I’ve gathered some undeniable takeaways for sustaining success and your mental and emotional well-being over the years. 💪🏽
