He invited me and Cookie, our guests Rodney and Holly and Mike and Natasha, to dinner at Mamula Island Hotel in Montenegro. It was an old fort that was turned into a luxury hotel and it’s only been open for two years. Dinner and exploring the property was simply amazing! I recommend anyone in Montenegro check it out!

When I went over to his house to discuss we got food, and I wanted to be impressive and eat healthy, so I ordered grilled chicken. Our food came, and I couldn’t believe Michael had ordered a bucket of KFC! 😂 I immediately regretted my decision, but Michael was kind enough to share his fried chicken. We laughed and had a great time. I knew at that moment just how similar we were and how cool of a dude he was. From going on 3 tours with him to him coming to the Forum to watch my Showtime teammates and I play, Michael was a great friend and an even better entertainer! The King of Pop was a true master of his craft, and his legacy will live on forever through his music and influence. I’m grateful that I could experience his greatness firsthand.

Cookie and I were so impressed with his wife Vanessa’s grace, class, and her beautiful speech about not only Kobe but their beautiful daughters. Vanessa put together an outstanding ceremony. We were also so impressed with how Vanessa and Lakers Owner Jeanie Buss designed Kobe’s statue. The details are incredible and it’s one of the best statues I’ve ever seen! Their eight years in the White House were historic in many ways, their representation broke down barriers and inspired countless people across the country. I admire President Obama’s dedication to the people and the impact he’s made across the world. It was a pleasure to work with him as co-chair of My Brother’s Keeper and provide academic assistance to young minority boys under the third grade. His impact is just as nice on the basketball court, too! Cookie and I were invited to a barbecue at the White House, and I played in a pickup game with President Obama and current and former NBA players. The game was tied and President Obama drained the game-winning shot and held his Michael Jordan against Utah in the NBA Finals pose for all to see! 😂 Barack, God bless you and Michelle for changing our country and the world forever!

In 1992, I did a Nickelodeon special called “A Conversation with Magic”, and 7-year-old Hydeia and I made an incredible impact. Hydeia changed the world with her bravery, speaking about how living with HIV affected her life since birth. She dedicated her life to activism and became a change agent in the HIV/AIDS fight. By speaking out at such a young age, she helped so many people, young and old, because she wasn’t afraid to share her story and allowed everyone to see that those living with HIV and AIDS were everyday people and should be treated with respect. Thanks to Hydeia, millions were educated, stigmas were broken, and attitudes about HIV/AIDs were changed. We will miss her powerful voice in this world. Cookie and I are praying for the Broadbent family and everyone that knew and loved Hydeia.

I’m still shocked that one of my childhood heroes and favorite athletes became one of my good friends because there’s no one like Muhammad Ali. To be stripped of his heavyweight title, sentenced to time in prison, and exiled from boxing for three and a half years...and then come back, reclaim the heavyweight title in 1974 against George Foreman, and be BETTER than he was before is unheard of!! His strength, dedication, and passion showed both in the ring and in the community. He is a world icon. I’ll never forget watching him carry the Olympic torch and light the cauldron in the ’96 Olympics in Atlanta. Knowing everything he overcame during his career made it an even more emotional moment for me. Out of all our memories, what will always stand out to me was when Muhammad Ali told me to meet him in Chicago to tell me he wanted me to be more than just a basketball player. It challenged me to think beyond the court. Seeing his activism and advocacy for the good of humanity and the underserved with Nelson Mandela, Malcolm X, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., US presidents, and more inspired me to create real change. It’s those moments and impact that cement him as my G.O.A.T. and will keep his legacy alive forever!!
