Growing up in the tiny, extremely conservative town I did, I knew the deal. I heard the slurs. I knew my time there was limited. Then I did a play with a summer stock rep company and I for the first time I met queer people, and people of different nationalities and backgrounds, and artists, and musicians, and I realized immediately THESE were my people. THEY felt “other.” THEY felt like outsiders. I loved them and they loved me and I felt myself step into my power and my personality for the first time. For some people it’s dance, for some it’s drag, for me it was musical theatre. I’m so grateful I found my tribe. Find yours. They’re out there.
