Enjoy the sounds of #Latingrass, a fusion of Latin and American folk music played with traditional bluegrass instrumentation. 🪕🎶 (Thanks for the quick lesson, @larryandjoe! @joe.troop.music @larrybellorinoficial 🤩) #ExpressWayPBS
tonight is the premiere of THE EXPRESS WAY with @dulehill at 9p/8c on @pbs. a passion project that dule and i had been developing since 2018. one that got passed on and almost died during the pandemic. but we kept on sharing the gospel until PBS – an institution that has fostered the arts longer than i’ve been alive – recognized its importance and stepped up. #ExpressWayPBS is more than a project i directed. it was a higher calling to shine light and celebrate artists using their craft in deeply transformative and impactful ways. and the premiere episode in california delivers on that calling: a deaf dancer @shaheem; a senior citizen cabaret troupe @grantavenue_follies; and the first LGBTQ mariachi group @mariachiarcoiris. a vibrant cross section of folks using art to rewrite their narratives like so many of us in this great state. thx to PBS and the @calico_inc team for understanding the mission and executing with such passion. you all equally deserve the credit (below) 🙏 special shout to @choward824 @jazmynsimon co-executive producer: @sophiakruz producers: brian rivera, nicki carrico directors of photography: @larkindonleydp, @joebressler steadicam operator/1st AC: @drewbarnett digital producer/camera operator: @tikioffline production manager: @go4sid production coordinators: miguel alcala, @amandapsayeg assistant production coordinator: papa diallo talent producer: @lit_lee16 audio supervisor: @kamalsound location sound: @laloguzman etc 1st AC: @justintran 2nd AC: @maxkinkadephotography, @katiejo media manager: @losjovel gaffers: @southafricangrip, @film_dope, @tandy_graham lighting assistant: @bdomontanez grips: kevin miiller, nima khazaei, jason james transportation: tommy boy HMU: @noigmeeks, @jackibrowngrooming digital producer: @totheppl story producers: @smithglover, @meguminishikura,, @bccforlife, @bruns.blake editors: @soupcommie, whitney dunn, @alexbohs, @ext.night, @carlcramer, @adlscypress junior editor: @raineyprime assistant editors: @xstinab, @_glennjamin, hector cartegena jr. composer: @mountcyanide colorist: @rkmstudios_color sound designer: james lucero sound mixer: james fielden GFX: @bubbas_la post supervisor: @dmic13

Texas, here we come! In the Lone Star State, @dulehill connects with an Aztec dancer, a blind painter and a Latino theater director, each breaking down cultural barriers and becoming leaders for the next generation. 🖌️🎭🥁 #ExpressWayPBS is all-new tonight at 9/8c! @caramiatheatre @yellowdogartbar @rainflowa @houstonaztec
texas is a vast state you don’t automatically think of when it comes to the arts. but as a battleground for so many of america’s most pressing issues, the arts play an even more critical role. cue these 3 changemakers: an aztec dancer fighting to preserve her indigenous heritage @rainflowa; a blind painter fighting his own battle and for other disabled artists @yellowdogartbar; and an all latinx theatre company fighting for their cultural stories to be seen @caramiatheatre. all 3 of these courageous artists were called to the frontlines. to lead and open up pathways for the next generation of texans ⭐️ #ExpresswayPBS

as a filmmaker, crafting a project’s visual framework is one of my favorite parts of the process. THE EXPRESS WAY is a celebration of the power of art. so it was important to elevate the artists’ craft beyond just capturing it. so i wrote what i called “special performances” that would encapsulate the story’s essence while simultaneously advancing the narrarive. for @amythystkiah, the special was for “wild turkey”, a haunting song about her mother’s suicide by alcohol. the idea was that amythyst goes to numb her pain in a bar that feels moody and underwater, symbolizing both sadness and alcohol. as she cathartically sings her song while moving through the bar, she processes her mother’s death. and by the end, she escapes the bar, foreshadowing escaping her own alcohol demise later in the story. the daisies also serving as a warning of death by alcohol. we also recorded all of the artists live as field recordings – no lip syncing or backing track – to ground these performances in the storytelling. so this rendition is unique from the master, just guitar and her powerful vocals. big love to amythyst for showing up on her first shoot day, trusting the process, and singing the song at least 2 dozen times. and her voice never cracked 🎤🎸

The arts are an integral part of who we are as a nation. It creates space for us to understand each other. Builds bridges for us to relate to each other. And opens us up to have empathy for each other. I was honored to join @thecreativecoalition in our nation’s capital a few days ago to advocate for the arts. Thank you to the National Endowment of the Arts @neaarts for all that you do. #AdvocateForTheArts #RightToBearArts #ArtIsPowerful

@dulehill talks about the inception of his new show, The Express Way With Dulé Hill, which gives inspiring artists a platform!
Giving an ASL lesson to the one and only @dulehill for his new @pbs show #ExpressWayPBS! I had a great time dancing, filming, and showing some of my world to Dulé and his crew. Dance is how I’ve always expressed myself, and I’m here to show that the deaf community can do ANYTHING. I can’t wait to show you what we cooked up — the premiere episode featuring myself and more incredible artists is now streaming on the PBS app!
