I planned to post this a few days ago but we ended up spending the weekend at the pediatrician, the pediatric ER and then the cardiologist. Good news is that Wilder has been cleared by the cardiologist and is healthy, happy and safe.
I was momentarily devastated when my labor stalled after 10 hrs and my team and I decided it was time to have a cesarean. I had “failed to progress” (I loath that term) and Wilder was stuck in my pelvis. Our only option was to head into the OR.
I had already recovered from one surgery earlier in the year and having to heal from another major surgery on top of being a new mom just felt too overwhelming.
Despite my fear, I settled into the reality of what was to come and by the time they were wheeling me into the OR I was calm and determined to make the rest of my birth experience a beautiful one.
Cesarean birth was so much more magical and meaningful than I could have imagined. That had a lot to do with the fact that my midwife and OB stayed with me beyond the end of their shifts to perform the procedure and my partner rock talked me through everything and kept me calm even when I wouldn’t stop bleeding.
The feeling of having a baby pulled out of your open body is unlike anything I could have prepared for. The rocking, the intense pressure, the release. The sound of Wilder crying. The flood of tears. The tremendous relief.
I’m still in awe of how I’ve healed and how my body continues to heal after such a trauma. I look forward to slowly returning to the physical activities I love so much. Patience Alexis, patience.
I know not everyone has a positive experience with this procedure. It so often brings a lot of trauma. I’m not saying my experience wasn’t traumatic, but I’m so grateful for the care I received, and for the moments of indescribable catharsis and joy that accompanied it.
