How did Barbara Corcoran turn $1,000 into a Billion-Dollar Business?
By the time she was 23, @barbaracorcoran had accumulated more than 20 jobs, as well as a series of straight D’s in high school and college.
That’s when she decided to make a change: she borrowed $1,000 and quit her job as a waitress to start a tiny real estate company in New York City. A true success story, as over the next 25 years, she transformed that $1,000 loan into a $5 billion real estate business.
She has been an investor/Shark for the past 10 seasons on ABC’s four-time Emmy Award-winning show, Shark Tank, investing in over 80 businesses to date. Here’s her advice and take on financial success.

Creativity has always been my secret sauce. Here’s why it works:
When I started my business with a $1000 loan, I had nowhere to go but up. I didn’t have the cash behind me, the right connections in real estate, or a seat at the table with the Old Boy Network.
But I learned early that the little guy has the corner on creativity. Big companies might have the corner on money, but they’re full of red tape, committees, and chains of approval. I didn’t have that, so I could think of an idea on a Monday and get it out by Wednesday.
I found inspiration everywhere, but I never had a good idea at my desk. For example, when I was flying through an Italian airport, I noticed the brightly color-coded arrivals board that made it clear where everyone needed to be. I took that idea and applied it to our listing cards, sorting them by the number of bedrooms. And guess what? We never lost a listing card again.
When my receptionist was inspired by an LL Bean catalog that featured the company’s employees and suggested we try the same, I didn’t hesitate a beat. We dressed our salespeople up, I took out a full page ad, and it became the most innovative campaign we ever ran.
And when I learned that co-op boards were not welcoming dogs in some buildings, with one board going as far as to say they would interview the dogs, I invited 100 dogs to Central Park and promised to teach them how to shake hands myself. The papers went wild over it, and our phone didn’t stop ringing.
One wacky, creative idea after the next, I moved my business up the ranks until I was the #1 competitor.
That’s the beauty of small businesses – you can act quickly, take a risk on that crazy idea you feel in your bones is a winner, and try something new before the rest of the industry wakes up to it.
