Christina Pascucci Instagram – Happy Earth Day! 🌎 🌱 As an avid diver, I’ve seen firsthand how plastics are increasingly pervasive in even the most remote corners of the world, including large piles of it floating off the coast of Malaysia Borneo (where this video was shot).
We can’t recycle our way out of this. Policy makers must not only address single-use plastics, but also look at a complete overhaul of the global plastic system.
Perhaps the U.S. should lead the way, as we are the worst culprit. We throw away about 300 pounds of plastic trash, per person, every single year.
As researchers predict more plastic than fish in the sea for the next generation, and recent studies show the vast majority of us have microplastics in our blood— we are poisoning ourselves and our environment.
This is not sustainable.
Lawmakers must also push for the expanded protection of our ocean against overfishing through the establishment of more ocean sanctuaries, kind of like national parks.
I think we can all agree we want our kids to breathe clean air and drink clean water; protecting the environment cannot be a partisan issue.
