Hari Nef Instagram – my second #metgala—and nothing compares. @voguemagazine, anna wintour, and andrew bolton: thank you as ever for including me i wore custom @hm with a corset underneath by the legendary @misterpearlofficial the met’s dress code this year, ‘the garden of time,’ samples its name from a short story by j.g. ballard. it’s a fanciful little allegory which, the way i saw it, unmines the tension between the future and the past this lead me to think about high glamour: how it looks, why it looks like that, where it comes from. i took my ‘avedon fashion’ book off the shelf, opened it up. i locked onto margot mckendry in the background of a photo from 1961 (slide 3). she reminded me of crystal labeija (slide 5) in frank simon’s 1968 documentary ‘the queen,’ which goes behind the scenes of a manhattan drag pageant (in 1968, dressing in drag was effectively illegal). so i thought about how the visual ideal of glamour travels, from high society to its fringes—and all the way through the decades. what does it mean for me, a card-carrying member of “the new world” (and you know exactly what i mean) to evoke the glamour of the old world? and what did it mean for my sisters who came before me? their beauty and grandeur moves me; i reflect on what they risked for it. i wanted to honor them last night thank you @chrishoran20 for your vision and hustle and for keeping me on best dressed lists—and occasionally worst-dressed lists, which is always cooler! no one does it like you thank you to @hairbyorlandopita and @yadim for sanctifying me from the neck up. i can’t believe i get to be coiffed and beat by such absolute mavericks. yadim used @valentino.beauty…i hear there are some exciting things going on over at maison valentino in the near future ;) thank you to @aarondnewbill and @meansss at @imgmodels for keeping me in fashion. i love you and congratulations to @condeunited who won the day :)
