Jane's observations of chimpanzees in what is now Gombe, Tanzania, shaped the way we view the animal world, and continuing to learn about chimpanzees β€” and the many other species who share their ecosystems β€” is essential to protecting them! Here are some ongoing studies: 🐡 The longest-running wild chimpanzee study in the world continues in Gombe, Tanzania! JGI funds research to continue studying our closest genetic relatives, and together we're learning so much. πŸ“ Also in Gombe, Tanzania, is a long-term study of olive baboons, led by Dr. Anthony Collins. This study has been going since 1972! 🌿 There are wild populations of chimpanzees that live around JGI's Tchimpounga Sanctuary in the Republic of the Congo. JGI-RoC staff monitor their behavior to know when it's safe to play outside with baby chimpanzees at the center. πŸ“± Teams of researchers also leverage the newest technology to monitor and study the larger biodiversity of these ecosystems, especially in Gombe, Tanzania. Jane Goodall Instagram – 🐝 Happy World Bee Day! 🐝

Bees may be small, but they play a large role in keeping ecosystems running through pollination. They also lend a helping hand (er, wing?) to our community-led conservation efforts!

To decrease reliance on activities like the wild meat trade, JGI supports sustainable, alternative livelihoods that help people and their environment. Beekeeping is one such livelihood, with JGI staff at @janegoodallinstitute_tanzania , @janegoodall_ug , and JGI – Republic of the Congo providing training and equipment in local communities.

With these resources, community members can support themselves, their families, and their communities in a way that maintains the local ecosystem! Learn more about alternative livelihoods β€” LINK IN BIO

Jane Goodall Instagram – 🌍🐒 Happy World Turtle (and Tortoise) Day from the Jane Goodall Institute! 🐒🌍

🌿 Turtles have roamed the Earth for hundreds of millions of years β€” there’s a lot we can learn from this resilient group of reptiles!

πŸ’š While they’ve weathered multiple mass extinctions, these amazing creatures do currently face numerous challenges, from habitat loss to climate change. By protecting their habitats, supporting conservation efforts, and spreading the word about the importance of biodiversity, we can ensure a brighter future for turtles, tortoises, and all wildlife.

Swipe to see some of the turtle friends we’ve had the privilege to care for and release back into the wild through our wildlife rehabilitation work at Tchimpounga Sanctuary.
