In 1992, while flying over Gombe forests where she first researched chimpanzees, Jane Goodall saw a sobering sight: The lush landscape had changed drastically with significantly fewer trees. This crucial, biodiverse forest ecosystem is so essential for wildlife to thrive — and the @janegoodallinst has been working to protect it ever since. Since that fateful flight, we‘ve worked hand in hand with local communities, governments, and partners to make a difference. 🤝Together, we’ve revitalized over 6 million hectares of habitat across Africa! #JaneGoodall #JaneGoodallInstitute #GombeBiodiversity #UNBiodiversity 🎥 credit: JGI/Bill Wallauer

Jane Goodall Instagram – 🎉 Playtime’s not just fun—it’s fun-damental! A study titled “The relationship between social play and developmental milestones in wild chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii)” explores social play in chimpanzees by analyzing the 33 years of behavioral data recorded at Gombe Stream National Park, in Tanzania (where Jane began her groundbreaking study, and where JGI continues research to this day).

🐵They found that during social play, young chimpanzees learn a lot of important behavioral, physical, and social skills that they carry on into adulthood. Dive into the details of this fascinating study and see how today’s research continues to build on Dr. Goodall’s initial research 📄.

Shout out to researchers Matthew R. Heintz, Carson M. Murray, A. Catherine Markham, Anne E. Pusey and Elizabeth V. Lonsdorf for their research and insightful findings (read here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5728447/)

Jane Goodall Instagram – 🌳🌲 Happy Arbor Day! 🌲🌳

If you’re looking for a way to celebrate, take Jane’s advice: “Any chance you have to be out in the forest, please try. Just see what it will do for you.”

Jane often talks about the important role that forests play in fighting global climate change, as well as the many resources and services they provide for us on a daily basis. Restoring and growing native trees all over the world is an important part of what the Jane Goodall Institute does:

🌱 Many @rootsandshoots groups globally have started projects to learn about and plant native trees in their communities.

🌿 Village Forest Monitors in Tanzania are trained by JGI staff to check on the health of local forest reserves.

🌳 Key partnerships with impactful groups like the@arbordayfoundation helped us contribute to #JanesGreenHope campaign by planting native trees all over the world. In these photos, you can see planting efforts in Washington, West Virginia, the Amazon, Madagascar, and Oregon.
