When infant chimpanzees are saved from the illegal wildlife trade, they arrive at Tchimpounga Sanctuary very young and often in dire need of both physical and emotional healing. Under the care of JGI's dedicated staff, each one receives a personalized care plan along with the company of peers their own age. 🍼➑️πŸ₯£ As these young chimps grow and switch from milk to solid foods, they begin enjoying nutritious soy porridge, which is crucial for their development and health. And it doesn't stop there! They're also gently introduced to the forest, where they learn to forage for wild fruits, nuts, seeds, and more as almost half of a chimpanzee's diet is fruit. 🌳🍌 With this blend of socialization, stable nutrition, and hands-on learning in their natural habitat, these rescued chimpanzees gain the physical and mental strength they need. It's not just about survival; it’s about fostering a life filled with joy and companionship. πŸ΅πŸ’š *JGI does not endorse handling or close proximity to wildlife. Jane Goodall Instagram – 🌿 Did you know? Chimpanzees and bonobos, our closest relatives in the animal kingdom, have fascinating differences despite sharing about 98% of their DNA! 🧬 Above, chimpanzees are shown on the left, with bonobos on the right.

🐡 While both species are highly intelligent and social, chimps have commonly been known for their aggressive behavior and male-dominated hierarchies, whereas bonobos are characterized by their peaceful, matriarchal societies and unique methods of conflict resolution through social bonding and sexual interactions.

However, recent discoveries stemming from a comparative study on male aggression in chimpanzee communities at Gombe National Park, Tanzania, and bonobo communities at the Kokolopori Bonobo Reserve, DRC, have cast doubt on these established distinctions. Bonobos may be more aggressive than we previously thought! πŸ™Š

Understanding these distinctions not only sheds light on our evolutionary past but also teaches us valuable lessons about cooperation, empathy, and diversity in nature. 🌍
