Chimpanzees and bonobos, our closest relatives in the animal kingdom, have fascinating differences despite sharing about 98% of their DNA! 🧬 Above, chimpanzees are shown on the left, with bonobos on the right. 🐵 While both species are highly intelligent and social, chimps have commonly been known for their aggressive behavior and male-dominated hierarchies, whereas bonobos are characterized by their peaceful, matriarchal societies and unique methods of conflict resolution through social bonding and sexual interactions. However, recent discoveries stemming from a comparative study on male aggression in chimpanzee communities at Gombe National Park, Tanzania, and bonobo communities at the Kokolopori Bonobo Reserve, DRC, have cast doubt on these established distinctions.
