Celebrate Earth Day with Dr. Jane Goodall and her long lost twin, Dr. Jane Not-Good-At-All! “Whether you’re busy saving chimps and ecosystems or perhaps winning the biggest drag competition in the universe, you can do something easy and impactful for Earth Day by switching to Ecosia (@ecosia)! Ecosia is a browser and search engine, but they dedicate 100% of their profits to the planet, and support amazing projects such as @janegoodallinst tree planting and chimpanzee protection programs in Uganda.

🌍📅 On this Earth Day, we are proud to share Jane’s timeless message of hope.
“Today, let’s all think how we can each do our bit. For every single one of us has a role to play and each one of us can make a difference.” – Dr. Jane Goodall 💚

🌿 Did you know? Chimpanzees and bonobos, our closest relatives in the animal kingdom, have fascinating differences despite sharing about 98% of their DNA! 🧬 Above, chimpanzees are shown on the left, with bonobos on the right.
🐵 While both species are highly intelligent and social, chimps have commonly been known for their aggressive behavior and male-dominated hierarchies, whereas bonobos are characterized by their peaceful, matriarchal societies and unique methods of conflict resolution through social bonding and sexual interactions.
However, recent discoveries stemming from a comparative study on male aggression in chimpanzee communities at Gombe National Park, Tanzania, and bonobo communities at the Kokolopori Bonobo Reserve, DRC, have cast doubt on these established distinctions. Bonobos may be more aggressive than we previously thought! 🙊
Understanding these distinctions not only sheds light on our evolutionary past but also teaches us valuable lessons about cooperation, empathy, and diversity in nature. 🌍

Appreciation post for our fellow doodlers! 🎨✨
If you ever get the chance to peek at Dr. Goodall’s field notes, you’ll notice lots of sketches and doodles scattered throughout its pages. 📝🐵
Contrary to common belief, doodling can actually improve concentration and focus by preventing the mind from wandering too far. In fact, research suggests that doodling while listening can enhance retention and recall of information, while also sparking creativity by engaging different parts of the brain! 🧠✏️

🌿 Every rescue matters! When infant chimpanzees are saved from the illegal wildlife trade, they arrive at Tchimpounga Sanctuary very young and often in dire need of both physical and emotional healing. Under the care of JGI’s dedicated staff, each one receives a personalized care plan along with the company of peers their own age.
🍼➡️🥣 As these young chimps grow and switch from milk to solid foods, they begin enjoying nutritious soy porridge, which is crucial for their development and health. And it doesn’t stop there! They’re also gently introduced to the forest, where they learn to forage for wild fruits, nuts, seeds, and more as almost half of a chimpanzee’s diet is fruit.
🌳🍌 With this blend of socialization, stable nutrition, and hands-on learning in their natural habitat, these rescued chimpanzees gain the physical and mental strength they need. It’s not just about survival; it’s about fostering a life filled with joy and companionship. 🐵💚
*JGI does not endorse handling or close proximity to wildlife. This represents a sanctuary ysetting with trained professionals.*

Taking a Breather: A Lesson from Chimpanzees 🐵
🌿 While a chimpanzee’s day is filled with excitement — finding food, grooming, playing — our closest living relatives in the animal kingdom also know the art of unwinding and being present.
When our researchers are out in the field observing these remarkable animals, it’s not uncommon to spend hours watching their leisurely activities. Here’s a perfect example: an adult male chimpanzee, reclining and simply savoring the moment. 🌴
It’s a gentle reminder that we, too, can benefit from taking a step back and embracing moments of respite. 🧘

Many people know Dr. Jane Goodall, but you may not know the Jane Goodall Institute! So let’s introduce ourselves…
The Jane Goodall Institute is a global, community-led conservation organization founded in 1977 that advances the vision and work of Dr. Jane Goodall. Each of our impactful programs is rooted in Jane’s story and unique approach to looking a the world. Here’s a look at what we’re focused on at JGI-USA:
🔍 Continued research into wild animal behavior — especially chimpanzees — at Gombe Stream Research Center in Tanzania
🌿 Community-led conservation, using our Tacare approach to work with communities to find solutions to the drivers of conservation issues
🫶 Best-in-class wildlife rehabilitation at our Tchimpounga Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Center in the Republic of Congo
🌱 Youth empowerment through our youth action program, @rootsandshoots , which teaches through service learning projects
Join us in inspiring hope and transforming it into action 💚

Do you know the difference between a chimpanzee and a monkey? The tail is your tell 🐒 Since chimpanzees are apes (great apes, to be exact!) they don’t have a tail 🐵
Gombe Stream National Park isn’t just home to the @janegoodallinst’s long-running wild chimpanzee study — it’s also home to a diversity of species that we’re committed to protecting. Take these charismatic monkeys: the olive baboon🫒🐒and red colobus monkey🔴🙈
The olive baboon is the heartbeat of Gombe, essential to the rich tapestry of life in this vibrant ecosystem. Their calls reverberate through the air, a constant reminder of their presence and the dynamic interplay that defines life in this corner of Tanzania.
While the baboons play on the ground, the red colobus monkey travels through the trees above. A highly arboreal species with vibrant fur and agile movements, they gracefully navigate the canopy, evading terrestrial threats by leaping between trees.

🌿🦜Explore the birds of Gombe Stream National Park with us!
We’ve spent decades researching wild chimpanzees and supporting conservation efforts in Gombe, so we’ve gotten to know its avian residents well along the way. Here are a few of the usual suspects:
🪶 The Pygmy Kingfisher meticulously preening its vibrant plumage
🪶 European Bee Eater scarfs down an afternoon snack
🪶 The elusive Black Cuckoo nestled beneath the cascading waters of the falls amidst the mist and spray
🪶 The Goliath Heron wading along Gombe’s shoreline in search of a next meal.
These moments capture the beauty and diversity of Gombe’s birdlife. Bird lovers: What other feathered friends do you see in this footage? 👀

Clip 5: A Black Cuckoo sits on a vine in the mist of a waterfall.
Clip 6: A small white and grey bird waddles on a vine.

As you wander through the lush forests of Gombe Stream National Park, the smallest wonders often hold the greatest surprises. Amidst the towering trees and rustling leaves, myriad insect species await the observant eye.
Dr. Jane Goodall always says that every species has a role to play in the tapestry of life, and that’s evident in some of Gombe‘s tiniest residents. Meet a few!
🌸 The hummingbird hawkmoth flits effortlessly from flower to flower with mesmerizing mimicry
🌀 Iconic dung beetles tirelessly roll their precious cargo through the undergrowth
🍃 Cicadas seamlessly blend into their surroundings, their intricate camouflage rendering them nearly invisible to the untrained eye, a testament to the artistry of evolution
So, as you tread softly through the corridors of your own backyard, take a moment to marvel at the intricate dance of life unfolding all around you 💚
