Jennifer Landon Instagram – Without a doubt the unsung hero of any production is the Script Supervisor, colloquially know as, ‘Scripty’. To summarize their job is nearly impossible, because they don’t have one job. They have ten. Not only are they tracking continuity (which means making sure sets, costumes, props, actions, hair, and makeup stay consistent from one take to the next and across scenes and episodes), they have also made sure you’ve said your lines correctly, documented camera movement, lenses/filters used, number of takes, written the director’s notes on each take for the edit, timed the freaking scenes and I’m not capturing half of it (breaking down a script before shooting is another mountain as are the production reports at the end of the day). How they do their job without 4 extra sets of arms and eyes and 5 more hours in a day still baffles me. From an actors’ perspective, the good ones know how to catch anything that might pull the audience out of a moment or do disservice to the writer, the great ones know how to do that while also allowing the actors and director to have enough freedom to bring the scenes to life. And the best ones do both of those things while offering emotional support, performance guidance if needed (they often know your characters arch better than you do), and friendship on the day.
