Yesterday we boarded a flight to Mumbai where I managed to get a shot of myself and our A321 aircraft’s pitot tubes – but do you know what these things are used for?
Pitot tubes are essentially an aircraft’s speedometers. You’ll find them protruding from aircraft with their axis hole front facing and other small holes perpendicular.
A pressure transducer connected to the tubes measures the difference between static and total pressure, and this value, along with the measured air density, can be subbed into Bernoulli’s equation to find the the velocity of the aircraft.
Velocity is the distance an object travels per unit of time, so pitot tubes = speedometers!
