My friend Alice left us yesterday, far too soon. She was a real light in this world. Many people have used the word kind in paying tribute to her, and it’s not coincidence. She was unfailingly kind in a way that told everyone she met that she cared about what they cared about. It was probably that quality that made her so good at her job. At its best, public policy is an endeavor to understand what other people care about most and speak to it. We shared a delight in the Dawgs, and in being the ideological outlier in a room, whether it was on a TV panel or a college campus. We both loved a good tough run and Jesus. I admired her so much. We crossed paths in Little Rock, her longtime home, right before the pandemic. I was giving a speech, she was helping organize the Little Rock Marathon. We went out for a beer and talked about life in that way that comes a little easier when you’re in a city one of you calls home, away from the bustle of D.C. She gave me a recommendation for a hike and a BBQ joint. I tried both and almost missed my flight watching a sunrise at the top of an Arkansas peak. We laughed at the idea that we live mere miles from each other but saved getting together for a random night halfway across the country. I saw her and stayed in touch plenty after that but that night felt special because it came before life changed in such unforeseeable ways. Now, it has changed again in an unforeseeable way. We always said we should run together, but if I’m honest, she was too fast for me. It is hard to believe that this faithful servant has fought the good fight and finished her race. But if you knew Alice, you knew she was every day “running with perseverance the race marked out for [her], fixing [her] eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.” The last thing I said to her was she looked “GORGEOUS IN GOLD” for the White House Correspondents Dinner. She looked so great, it was worth all caps. This feels so awful and inexplicable here. But I’ve heard the streets are gold where she is going, and I pray she is having the most gorgeous run there now. I’ll miss her.

I wore this to record a podcast with @meghanmccain yesterday because the deal I make with myself is that if I’m wearing these outfits that might potentially embarrass my children, I also must wear them in my real life, so that I have some skin in the game. Given that I wore this to a professional event, I think that’s all the more reason you should listen to “Meghan McCain Has Entered the Chat” with @guypbenson and me. 😂But also because Meghan is a good interviewer and an interesting political observer, which is why her podcast is killing. Dressing up as @taylorswift’s boyfriend for school drop-off. I should never doubt myself in a thrift store! I mean, I don’t have @emzanotti thrifting luck where I actually find luxury items. But I have VERY SPECIFIC thrift store luck, like when I looked at @killatrav’s outfit and that very day, I found a mustard yellow Liz Claiborne blazer, a mustard pleather pair of pants and a 90s ribbed, striped turtleneck in under 10 mins.
I owned this hat and these comically matching chunky boots, too. I added a maroon striped sock that doesn’t tie it all together because you can’t see it, but I liked the *idea* of it. See the kids’ verdict in the video. Oddly enough, I think it was my husband, not the kids, who found my last outfit most cringey. Haha.

Took all 4 kids to meet @karolinpublic and kids at Mt. Vernon, which is a bit of a family tradition at this point whenever they’re in town.
It went great except for the part where George Washington built retaining walls on his back lawn in such a way as to not spoil the view in any direction, so it’s impossible to tell your toddler is headed for a 4-ft drop because you just think it’s just a cute row of bricks and then a teenager from a tour group who can see from another angle swoops in to save her. Thanks, teenager!
Those invisible retaining walls are called “Haha walls” because it’s very funny to foil a veteran mom who is being very chill about her toddler, Father of Our Country.

Operation give my weird guest bathroom with UPHOLSTERED FABRIC MOLDING a very dramatic makeover while my husband was out of town because he does not mind my results, but does not enjoy my chaos. It’s a long name for an op.
Five days, four kids, dye the grout, paint the tile, refinish the vanity, hang a new mirror, add knick-knacks, call in @lyndseyfifield to help me clean and hold the baby. Steve arrives in time to install my new light fixture. Ta-dahhhh! Did I mention I was tempted to paint everything in my house black? #diy #paintitblack #paintedtiles
Oh, and I did keep that weirdly placed medicine cabinet bc Steve loves practical storage and it was too short a timeline to rip it out, do drywall repair, and paint over it.

Had a great day with my family and all the kiddos! Took the big girls out during baby nap, tried to think of something special and pampering, and suggested a mani-pedi. But it turns out I’m not that huge a fan of mani-pedis and neither are they, so they asked to go to the bookstore and we got ourselves a little treat at the cafe instead! That’s definitely something we all got from my mom, the greatest mama and school librarian that ever has been. There are few things more special to share with your kids than a love of reading. We also went shoe shopping. That’s a love I did not inherit from my mom, but it’s also pretty special, and I’m passing it down! 📚👢👱🏻♀️👱🏻♀️ Being a mom is the best, funnest thing I’ve ever done, and getting to watch these two girls grow up and be such great big sisters to their baby siblings has made it exponentially better even when I thought it couldn’t get better!
My wonderful mother-in-law is in town this weekend, so we are attempting a great Mother’s Day gift dependent on the compliance of a toddler and a baby. 👧🏼👶🏻 Good luck to us! We have some back-up gifts. Ha. Everyone is excited for a big weekend with the grandparents!
