Nathalie Kelley Instagram – The tourism industry is notorious for destroying ecosystems and further impoverishing indigenous communities (look at Tulum) but there are some companies looking to change that. Bravo @aulaartesana for this wonderful initiative that takes tourists to communities like Patacancha for an immersive authentic experience while providing economic support for these communities. At 3500 meters above sea level, Juan and his family are stewarding one of Peru’s most vital ecosystems. As our glaciers melt these high altitude grasslands will be increasingly important to capture and store water. Projects like these allow Juan to shepherd his alpacas and steward the water like his ancestors have done before him. His only economic alternative would be work as a low paid porter on the Inca trail or working in the mines. I loved my visit to Patacancha so much I went back with my whole family.
