Rachael Carpani Instagram – I’m late posting about #IWD 💔I was stuck , unable to post ,unlike previous years,an enthusiastic participant celebrating so many AMAZING women💛,applauding those doing INCREDIBLE work to accelerate progress for women 🙌 ,in awe of the shoulders we stand on (please know being unable to know how to “celebrate “ and eat a cupcake , I do not diminish what incredible women are doing – in fact I am in awe more than ever because you continue on in the face of horrifying statistics 💔) We can no longer deny that we have an epidemic of violence against women , right here, in Australia.

And for the first time my rage eclipsed my sadness. 18 WOMEN HAVE BEEN KILLED THIS YEAR, at the hands of men . Read that again .

Women are NOT SAFE. A woman was murdered on the eve of #IWD .Another today.We exist in an epidemic of violence against women.Most men are HORRIFIED by it,but here we are again, watching the violent entitlement of men over women’s bodies,their lives,& the skewered, sympathetic media coverage of the perpetrators.

And no, this is not against men, it’s about ALL of us.It is a brutal reminder that the lived experience for women is DIFFERENT.When it comes to safety, women are at a disadvantage, & we all know it is disproportionately worse for women of colour, disabled women, young women ,elderly women .But we just have not normalised the conversation to the degree that it has made our country any safer for women💔

I think most women would welcome questions from men about what it’s like to walk at night / run with one headphone in / walk to our car clutching our keys/wonder how safe our wardrobe choice is for the day-everyday/go on a date / be in any parking garage /politely smile through an unsafe situation/ go to a bar alone or ANYWHERE ever ….she will enthusiastically welcome a man who embraces an opportunity to listen,learn and grow,knowing he will walk away feeling more equipped to call out behaviour & talk with mates that encourages disrespect and the continuation of women feeling unsafe.
