First look at MUFASA, the next in what I hope will be a long, lifetime run of art-making with all my wonderful friends. A labor of love same as the rest. And as for the film itself, for decades children have sat in theaters all over the world experiencing collective grief for the first time, engaging Shakespeare for the first time, across aisles in myriad languages. A most potent vessel for communal empathy.
Scouting. All my film fam can relate to this particular brand of exhaustion 🤪 📸 by @mrjameslaxton
#B-roll 👌🏿
@ava’s ORIGIN and Jonathan Glazer’s ZONE OF INTEREST. Watched these two as a double-header — first viewing of ORIGIN, third of ZONE OF INTEREST (I was in Telluride but not Venice). A very productive pairing; both works of adaptation by sincere artists with earnest aims. Different yet equally inspired approaches; I don’t have any experience with the Martin Amis source material for ZONE but have read Ms. Wilkerson’s Caste. The film you see from reading that work is NOT the film Ava and her collaborators give us (gloriously so, both achieve their own distinct greatness within their respective mediums). I watched Jonathan speak about his approach to ZONE and found confirmation of the thoughtfulness abundant in the film’s craft and a clear indication of the purposeful journey to transmute literature into CINEMA. I found both films incredibly moving and, for me, fittingly paired. My favorite works in these two filmmakers’ filmographies. Humbling, inspiring stuff.

Nice shot by friend and filmmaker @mattmorrisfilms #35mm #contaxt3
LOVED building this four disc edition of THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD with @criterion 🙇🏿♂️ Kitchen sink type deal — run of show commentary with myself, Joi and James. Deleted scenes, THE GAZE, all the teasers, a printed graphic novel edition of our lost episode GENESIS… and more 💪🏿

The approach into #cannes2017 is just an absolutely gorgeous bit of gliding over pristine water. Leaves you breathless that we head indoors, into the dark and find beauty of the same caliber. Soundtrack provided by @candlestickem 🙌🏿
Father’s Day. They BOTH crushed this. And it wasn’t very many takes: we filmed the montage that follows this in the film on the same day. We ended the scene on the shot we did because I loved where @michaelbeach went when the dialogue concluded. We have it filmed from the otherside but being close to him at the end like this, you felt all the undercurrents of what Frank is going through in that simple shake of the glass and lingering gaze. Proud of all of us here
Social media is a trip: blame @lilyinapad for tonight’s film choice. Haven’t seen this in at least twenty years. Kinda hyped to see how it holds up!!!
