Carl Lentz Instagram – A friend I love recently told me that when I use the word “addict” or “addiction” I am using “victim language.”
The inference is that if you say that, you are somehow displacing blame or excusing your actions. I used to think that exact thought when people would say “I am an addict.”
Here is the truth: the original intention of anybody stating “I am an addict” is the first step to naming and accepting “I have a problem that I am powerless over.” Its the very beginning of getting help. Using the word “addict” is not an excuse for behaving badly or not taking responsibility for actions. In fact it’s the direct opposite. It’s a statement wrapped in humility and ownership that is “the return of choice.”
My refusal to believe I could ever be an addict, led to a fruitless and ultimately arrogant pursuit of “fixing myself.” “Getting over it.” “Pray more.” Common things you hear mainly in christian circles that leaves people utterly bound in cycles of destruction. It doesn’t have to be like that. Saying you’re a recovering addict doesnt mean you love Jesus any less. It doesnt mean you use it as a shield. It means you are ready to face reality and stand accountable for the pain you have caused and have a desire to break those patterns in your life and make amends.
I’m so grateful I was able to hear the truth and change the entire direction of my life. I want that for other people as well.
To all the addicts and recovering addicts out there, keep fighting because you are not alone and it will get better… | Posted on 14/Jun/2024 22:32:08
