Watching as Parkinson’s related dementia slowly would steal away from his mind… despite the pain and hardship of the disease there were many moments to cherish. And in many ways I saw the best of my father as he grappled with this wretched disease.
I also saw the strength of my mother, his primary caregiver. Seeing my mother meet the significant difficulties of being a caregiver opened me up to the enormous challenges faced by millions of people in our country who care for parents, children or other family amidst serious health challenges. We as a country must do more to support them. I am proud to lead legislation to do so.
