I am forever inspired by André De Shields. Not only for his unbelievable catalogue of work, but by the resilience of spirit, the depth of his wisdom and the kindness he exudes. Here is a throwback to the time I saw Hadestown and had the honor of meeting him and hearing his sage advice. His words and entire presence really had an affect on me. 1. Surround yourself with people whose eyes light up when they see you coming. 2. Slowly, is the fastest way to get to where you want to be 3. The top of one mountain, is the bottom of the next. So keep climbing.
No one, not even Presidents, are above the law.
This experience was a welcome reminder and lesson for myself…We are all too quick to judge and too slow to extend grace; to be unconditional in our kindness; or to simply extend some latitude to a person who we have no idea what they are going through or struggling with.
My dad was such a force in life, shaping a world of love and opportunity alongside my mother. He radiated a contagious joy and sense of mischievousness that made life fun. Watching as Parkinson’s related dementia slowly would steal away from his mind… despite the pain and hardship of the disease there were many moments to cherish. And in many ways I saw the best of my father as he grappled with this wretched disease. I also saw the strength of my mother, his primary caregiver. Seeing my mother meet the significant difficulties of being a caregiver opened me up to the enormous challenges faced by millions of people in our country who care for parents, children or other family amidst serious health challenges. We as a country must do more to support them. I am proud to lead legislation to do so. Dementia affects countless American families, there are organizations dedicated to awareness and research. Something *light*hearted for your feed.
Sen. @corybooker believes Trump’s felony conviction is a “moment of justice” for the American people. #Colbert
This is one of my favorite memories from one of my Presidential Primary Debates with Joe Biden. And ultimately I do indeed agree with my mom’s general point: There is so much mocking, meanness and hate; too many who resort to demeaning, debasing and degrading others. What I will always love about Joe Biden is his deep sense of humility and generosity of spirit; his true caring for others; his willingness to listen and try to understand. He has shown me over and over that he is just a truly good human being I’m proud of the things that President Biden has done for the American people. I will be honored to campaign and stand up for him between now and November. I will have much to discuss about his accomplishments. But I know I will inevitably talk about his true heart. Despite difficulties and challenges, despite the inevitable imperfections in all who step forward to lead, he has show a master class in human decency.
June is Alzheimers Awareness month. This disease hits close to home for my family as it does for so many Americans. Dementia can take away so much, and yet there are also many beautiful moments to treasure nonetheless. It’s become abundantly clear reproductive rights are relentlessly under attack by radical right wing politicians who want to ban essential health care services with no exceptions. If these politicians won’t stand up for your health care rights, it’s time to send people to Washington who will.
Happy Pride Month!
Sen. @corybooker and other members introduced legislation to make IVF treatments more accessible, but can it pass the GOP? #Colbert
I’ll never stop having conversations like this until the injustice against LGBTQIA Americans are made right. Shoutout to my cousin @rupaulofficial for being such a shining light. #fbf
Thanks @stephenathome I’m *positive* that I had a great time on the show.
For more than 150 years June 19th has been a celebration of our country’s continued work, sacrifice, struggle, death and war in another major step towards America’s highest ideals. Four years ago I introduced legislation to make this day an official Federal holiday, and two years later watched as the legislation became a reality. Today as we officially celebrate this holiday I want it to be a reminder that liberty has to be for everyone. That in this country, every generation has to work and sacrifice to secure the blessings of liberty because freedom is not ever won.
IVF is supported by the vast majority of Americans Independents, Democrats and Republicans. Legislation establishing a national right to IVF treatment, making it more affordable, as well as securing access for members of our military, should be a bipartisan slam dunk. Yet most Senate Republicans blocked the bill from advancing. Nonetheless, we will not give up.
Excited to be tonight’s guest on the @colbertlateshow
