“Don’t believe in kings, believe in the Kingdom” Believe in America. Not an individual. Not a single leader. Believe in the idea. Believe in the promise. Believe in our possibility. And then be willing to work for Her. This is truly our greatest hope. As another great lyricist, Langston Hughes wrote: O, yes, I say it plain, America never was America to me, And yet I swear this oath— America will be!
Here is to the many everyday heroes in this world that don’t get attention…but are DOING the work, overcoming challenges and inspiring others to do the same.
May we ask constructive questions and challenge the status quo in order to help bring about an even better tomorrow. Happy Easter to all who celebrate.
There’s a case before the Supreme Court that will have huge implications not just for reproductive rights but for Americans’ access to healthcare in general. The case has to do with mifepristone, a medication that doctors prescribe to induce an abortion. It’s how most abortions happen. It’s saved the lives of countless women facing pregnancy-related health complications. The FDA first approved Mifepristone 24 years ago after a rigorous four-year process of scientific trials and analysis. The medicine has been used safely and effectively by countless women for more than two decades. Then, last April, a one time anti-abortion activist who became a Trump-appointed federal judge cast aside decades of precedent and issued a ruling imposing a nationwide ban on Mifepristone, declaring that the FDA had improperly approved the drug almost a quarter century ago. It’s not right that one unelected lower court judge with no scientific or medical background can be dictating health care policy for the entire nation. This case is about way more than one drug. If this ban is allowed to stand, any judge anywhere in America can unilaterally decide to ban any medication of any kind they want.
Wisdom from Mr. Rogers that was so meaningful to me. I hope it is to you also. Take Care. Take Heart. Don’t give up. Don’t give up on yourself. Heal, grow, forgive, forgive yourself. Love thy neighbor as you love yourself. Love yourself better.
Take us to church Jennifer Hudson!
Freedom? On July 4th we celebrated our independence and freedom but for many, fireworks bring forth memories of gun violence triggering trauma or echoing horrific moments of past pain and fear. It’s a tragic truth that guns are the leading cause of death for children in America. And that a majority of Americans have felt the long reach of the nation’s gun violence epidemic in one way or another. Gun violence is preventable. America is unique in the pervasive level of gun violence that has shattered the lives of too many. When kids are worried whether they’re hearing fireworks or gunshots—we have to ask, what will it take to free our communities from the epidemic of gun violence and death? The answer? We are the answer. Our relentless activism, tireless work, and constant demand. May we celebrate a 4th of July soon where we are free from fear and the epidemic of gun violence is history.
I so wish you well on your journey today and everyday.
Excited to join @vp Harris this week and all the great people working to protect our environment, address climate change and advance environmental justice at the League of Conservation Voters. President Biden and VP Harris have done more than any other administration in history for the environment.
Watch to the end!
59 years ago today thousands of brave Americans began a long march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. It was the activists’ second attempt; a few weeks earlier, the marchers, led by the late John Lewis, were met at the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma by a blockade of state troopers who attacked them with billy clubs and tear gas when they refused to disperse. On March 21, 1965, the marchers set out again. They would walk for five days before reaching the state capitol. For all of those who might be feeling discouraged, I hope that the words of Martin Luther King Jr. fortify your spirit.
The Senate will soon vote on legislation that provides $95 billion in funding for urgent security needs and to meet the dire need for humanitarian assistance across the world. I will support this bill, even with its flaws, because it’s critical that the United States stand up to address global and democratic security issues and the immense and growing humanitarian needs around the world. One of this bill’s flaws is a provision that would force a sale of TikTok. As written, I don’t support this provision, not because I don’t have concerns about TikTok or its ownership structure — I do — but because I worry that Congress is missing an opportunity to address larger issues with social media in general, from screen addiction, to social media’s negative effects on mental health, to the alarming impact it can have on the well-being of American children, to privacy, to the stunning proliferation of hate speech online, to its use for bullying and intimidation, to its toxic spread of misinformation, and more. Congress should work to address these broader issues in a separate bill and have a separate, full debate of these issues — not stick piecemeal riders onto a must-pass bill. I worry now that the urgency to address the ills of these platforms will be diffused and our ability to come up with real, lasting solutions — while also protecting the benefits of these platforms — will be lost for some time. I know people are frustrated. I am too. We must continue the work though. This is not the last word on these issues.
To all the women who have never stopped believing in and working for freedom.
On this Earth Day let us recommit to protecting our oceans, with all of their majesty and magic, by working to keep plastics out of our oceans. One way I have been tackling plastic pollution is by addressing the plastic production process and introducing the “Protecting Communities from Plastics Act.” If enacted, this will reduce our reliance on unnecessary plastics, and help keep them out of our oceans. Please support local, state, and federal efforts to protect our oceans. Thank you @wandering.westerner for capturing such a wonderful moment. 🤿: @jo.peters_didier
You are not define by what happens to you. You are defined by how you choose to respond. It is not happening to you. It is happening for you. Wishing you the best today and everyday.
This piece by Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield in @nytopinion expertly summarizes the continued violence facing the people of Sudan. In the Senate I am a part of a bipartisan coalition that continues to call out the horrors people are experiencing and pushing for solutions that will build a just and lasting peace.
