“DAWN”
from “Comica” (2002)

From the launch of Miraikan (The National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation) in 2001 until 2013, Ryuichi Sakamoto’s music played in a corridor called the oval bridge surrounding Geo Cosmos (a sphere in the museum that projects a realistic vision of Earth, expressed in a digital format).
Ryuichi created installation music in four parts: DAWN, DAY, SUNSET, and NIGHT. The music was innovative in that it was generated in real-time by meteorological data such as temperature, sunshine, wind speed, and solar radiation measured at Miraikan.

The museum’s first director, Mamoru Mohri, also known as the first Japanese astronaut, had a close relationship with Sakamoto in many ways, including conducting an experiment to listen to Sakamoto’s music selected by Mohri in space during his second space flight.

The album Comica (2002) contains recordings of Ryuichi’s generative installation music and additional works from 2001.
