The title “Esperanto” refers to an artificial language invented by Ludovico Zamenhof. The album’s overall composition reflects Sakamoto’s comment that it is “imaginary ethnic music.”
The album incorporates so-called techno music techniques, such as introducing Fairlight CMI and sampling sources into ethnic music, aiming for a new musical structure that is not pop. The many pauses and quiet sounds that appear in the work are intended to represent the rustling of dancers’ clothes and the sound of the floor.
