Last Saturday night, in her second appearance at the Gardenia, Carolyn Henessy proved that she is no one-shot wonder. From beginning to end, she wowed her full-house crowd with a spectacular performance that outdid even her Gardenia debut.
Playing to strengths that even she didn’t know she had, Carolyn embarked on another of her fantastic musical journeys, with her terrific charm and wit. Last night’s show even included a nod to Halloween, with a special medley that began with the theme from “The Addams Family” and included a parody of, “It’s Magic”, as well as a couple of other tunes, all tinged with a comedic tone, and arranged by her brilliant accompanist, Mitch Kaplan.
There is something very exciting about being up close and personal with the performers at the Gardenia. Some have described it as almost like seeing them in their living room.
In Carolyn’s case, she occupied every inch of the small platform that the Gardenia sometimes employs for those of a shorter stature. It’s only a very few inches tall, but it’s amazing what a few extra inches can do, and It ruins none of the intimacy.
In last night’s performance, Carolyn hit all the notes: comedy, pathos and sentimentality among them. Part acting and part singing, she accomplished what she came there to do.
