TERRY COLE’S REVIEW OF MY CABARET SHOW LAST SATURDAY NIGHT! Thanks…Terry Cole…you’re a peach!!! Last Saturday night, in her second appearance at the Gardenia, Carolyn Henessy proved that she is no one-shot wonder. From beginning to end, she wowed her full-house crowd with a spectacular performance that outdid even her Gardenia debut. Playing to strengths that even she didn’t know she had, Carolyn embarked on another of her fantastic musical journeys, with her terrific charm and wit. Last night’s show even included a nod to Halloween, with a special medley that began with the theme from “The Addams Family” and included a parody of, “It’s Magic”, as well as a couple of other tunes, all tinged with a comedic tone, and arranged by her brilliant accompanist, Mitch Kaplan. There is something very exciting about being up close and personal with the performers at the Gardenia. Some have described it as almost like seeing them in their living room. In Carolyn’s case, she occupied every inch of the small platform that the Gardenia sometimes employs for those of a shorter stature. It’s only a very few inches tall, but it’s amazing what a few extra inches can do, and It ruins none of the intimacy. In last night’s performance, Carolyn hit all the notes: comedy, pathos and sentimentality among them. Part acting and part singing, she accomplished what she came there to do. An evening with her is like watching the emergence of a Broadway star. Charming onstage and off, she is a genuine delight.

Berkshires, Saturday, Day 6: spent the morning combing through over (I’d say) roughly 6,000 pieces of Asian art and antiquities…found beautiful things. Bill…the proprietor of the largest Asian art gallery in the world…was gracious enough to let me in before 10 AM. He regaled me with stories of Asian culture, history, religious details, and his own his home in Indonesia which has 17 temples on the property. The store is mind-boggling. An intensive rehearsal…there are some balletic stretches in this piece and we spent the day discovering our dance moves. I’m speaking figuratively, of course. Our director, Matthew Penn, had the cast/crew over to his extraordinary home for dinner last night. I’m attaching pictures of his backyard which, if I could work it out, I would never leave. He has a pond (made by his father) bears and turtles and rabbits and squirrels and a view that is almost unparalleled with anything I’ve ever seen from a private home except Sabrina Laila Kern’s chalet in Switzerland with a view of, y’know, the Alps. Great conversation about the state of the theater as art and business. Focused primarily on the area’s local and regional theater, and Broadway, so I sat quietly and listened. Listening is good. There’s a big loop I’m out of but, being here, I’m inching my way in. We all strolled in the grass by the pond (which is warm enough for swimming…and I brought a suit!), but…after a thorough check…I’m happy to report: Tick count: today: 0, total: 0
