Nearly a decade ago when I first set out on my path as a doula I took a three day training course. After that, I was told I needed to get “certified” under the banner of a respected agency. The agency would then take an annual fee, have me read some books and write a paper, and then request an evaluation form from an OB or midwife saying that I was a good and obedient doula.
The fresh-out-of-college version of me didn’t think much of it. At that point in my life I was very familiar with paying a fee and writing a paper to get a stamp of approval.
It wasn’t until hospitals started to ban uncertified doulas from attending births that I realized that by maintaining my “certification”, I was feeding into a lie, perpetuating an illusion that certification is even necessary to do this work.
When aspiring doulas ask me where to certify, I invite them to rethink that costly and frankly oxymoronic route. Instead, I tell them they should be investing in their learning and in inner growth.
Why? Because doulas were never intended to be controlled by a governing corporation. In fact, it’s the antithesis of what we stand for. A doula’s role is to serve the mother – not an agency. To show up as a doula doesn’t require a fancy badge. We are not clinicians. We are sisters, mothers, friends, grandmothers: women holding space for divine transformation.
Being in a state of constant growth and learning is important in any career path and in every passion, and it’s especially true when it comes to birth work. That is why @drmauramoynihan and I created a six month doula workshop and mentorship to support you in discovering and strengthening YOUR inner compass, to find your own unique path to be of service to this work.
