Carson Meyer Instagram - A few weeks ago a client of mine called me at 36 weeks to tell me her baby was breech. She was planning a home birth with an autonomous midwife who had a great deal of experience and trust in supporting breech delivery. We talked through all of her options and she said “I feel good going forward with my plan to birth at home. I trust my baby’s wisdom, my body and I feel well supported by my birth team”  In most states licensed midwives are not legally permitted to support breech delivery. Breech delivery is no longer taught in medical school so most OBs refuse to assist in breech delivery making cesarian delivery prior to the onset of labor the default “option” for most women. For this reason,  when babies present breech in the final weeks of pregnancy it can result in a great deal of stress for the mother birthing within a system who won’t support her wishes. Those final sacred weeks of pregnancy are spent attempting to spin her baby through a number of interventions and routines. Sometimes successful, sometimes not.  Last week when my client went into labor she was ready to birth her baby however he presented himself. There was zero stress or expectation placed onto her or her baby, just trust. To our surprise his head emerged first. He flipped in labor!  I share this as a reminder not to mistake your providers limitations as your limitations. 🙏🏼🤍 Photo via @lindseymeehleis @indiebirth

Carson Meyer Instagram - Ringing in 30🥂💍✨ My twenties brought me the greatest blessings. Meeting my soul mate, becoming a mama, finding our home and getting to live each day doing work that fills my heart with so much joy and purpose. Johnathan and I met when I was 22 years old and has been my anchor through every wave and well of inspiration and presence that has made my life a waking dream. The day before my 30th birthday he took me to the train station of our charming little town and proposed. I’m still in shock that he was able to surprise me. No one can surprise me! (I was wearing Birkenstocks with socks for fuck’s sake!) I had already decided he had no choice but to spend the rest of his life with me but now it’s official and I can’t wait to celebrate our love and all that we’ve built together. Right before we left the house Lou pointed to my bare finger and said, “RING”. She almost blew his cover but I take it she approves that mom and dad are getting hitched.

Carson Meyer Instagram - I recently asked my 93 year old grandmother if she breastfed my mother or if her mother breastfed her. “Oh heavens no” she said “ I didn’t know any mothers who breastfed and if they were they certainly weren’t talking about it or doing it in public!” Predatory formula marketing has a long dark history (not just in the US) and these corporations are still hard at work convincing mothers that formula is the quick fix solution to their troubles. Influencers and celebrities are making money off of our breastfeeding challenges and it’s no secret that we live in a society that puts profit before people. Although the WHO recommends breastfeeding until two years of age and beyond, a majority of babies don’t get breastmilk past six months. This is a reflection of a culture that is failing mothers. When people say ‘breast is best’ it DOES NOT mean that breastfeeding mothers are superior. It simply means that breastmilk is the most nutritious substance you can give your baby. There’s an entire industry built on the propagation of the false equivalency that formula yields the same benefits as breastmilk. Every mother deserves to be informed. Carson Meyer Instagram - Part 3 of 4: Our Birth Story A couple hours later I got into the shower. Intensity was building but I was still coping ok. I have very little recollection of what happened in this phase. Much like a fever dream, I would flow in and out consciousness or as @lbreggy says, “I left my body to get my baby”. There was no talk of time, no timing of contractions, NO cervical exam. Just patience. Just trust. Our midwife and Johnathan steadily and quietly witnessing my process unfolding just as it needed to. Around noon, I insisted on getting into the tub, and from there things really shifted. I no longer felt contractions, instead I felt the expanding of my hips and tension shooting through the front of my legs. I could feel Lou’s head pushing against my tailbone. I wanted someone to just break my tailbone off to put a stop to it. I howled with each contraction. There was no hypnobirth, no orgasmic birth - just roaring and profanities contrasted against the Vedic chants playing in the background. The perfect encapsulation of birth if you ask me: a beautiful spiritual journey and a real bitch. Johnathan stayed at my side,steady as a rock. (Even when I bit through his skin 😳). What grounded me the most and got me through was my connection with Lou. After screaming in agony I would talk to her and tell her that it was all ok and how proud I was of her. I knew she was going through it and working hard with me and for that, I was grateful. We were all alone and in it together at the same time. So much doubt came up in me. I forgot everything I knew and believed about birth. Although I could feel with my fingers that Lou was close, I was convinced it just wouldn’t work. I was at my edge. In retrospect I was pushing but I had no idea. My body had taken over.

Carson Meyer Instagram - Walking alongside hundreds of women on their journeys to motherhood has been the greatest preparation for my own pregnancy - which has been blissful beyond my expectations. Each and every mother and baby I’ve had the privilege of supporting has given me the greatest gift and has taught me more than they may realize. I always say, the more births you attend the less you know about birth but the more trust you have in it. Every single birth and pregnancy is unique, like the life that comes from it. Each one serves as a reminder that this process is not a formula or a textbook. By design, it is intended to challenge the hyper analytical human mind that just wants “answers.” It is a spiritual path. One that requires tremendous trust and surrender no matter which way you do it. Thank you to all my doula mama sisters for showing me the way and showing me what strength is.
