Thanks to Jerry Hebron, U.S. Department of Agriculture’s advisor on urban agriculture, for convening a robust roundtable of farmers from across Detroit yesterday, and to Tepfirah Rushdan, Detroit’s first director of urban agriculture, for adding her wisdom to the conversation.
These hard-working farmers have been working here for years, and they walked me through their needs on water access, work force development, crop insurance etc.
But what came through most clearly was their passion for uplifting their communities, providing healthy food in neighborhoods that might not otherwise get it, and supporting our youth.
As I continue my work in the House Agriculture Committee on the Farm Bill, it was really helpful to hear from folks on the ground on what we need to do to bring more farmers, more food, and more opportunities into our communities. | Posted on 07/Mar/2024 01:14:47
