It was my absolute joy to host State Sen. Sarah Anthony in D.C. at the State of the Union. We first met back in 2018 while knocking doors together, and now she’s the Michigan State Senate’s first African-American Appropriations Chair. Sen. Anthony is a star on the rise and a leader on economic opportunity for all, reproductive rights, and gun safety. Introducing her to national leaders yesterday evening was the highlight of my week.

Yesterday’s news of violence over food delivery in Gaza highlights again how dire the humanitarian situation is there, and how important it is that we get the ceasefire deal that negotiators from all sides are working on. I and so many in Congress have been urging the White House privately and publicly to use all available means to get a deal done before Ramadan. That deal should include a halt to the fighting by both sides, the return of all hostages to families who have been desperate and without even proof of life for months, and a surge of humanitarian aid into Gaza. There will be much more to negotiate on long-term issues, but it starts with a concrete deal in the near term.
Another smashing success! Congratulations to the cast & crew of this year’s @brightonhs_bulldogs Musical – Disney’s High School Musical – for their incredible sold-out performance last night. I met the cast & crew before the show and was amazed by their energy & dedication – they’re set to do seven shows in two weeks! This is the third musical I’ve seen in office and I’m still in awe of the students’ talent – from singing & dancing to set design, lighting, & music! Thanks to director Phil Johnson, his team, and to the families and community for their support of the Brighton Musical. The production runs through March 17th, so don’t miss your opportunity to see this great show!

This is a historic moment in the fight against gun violence, and also I hope a moment that brings relief for Oxford. Thank you to everyone who testified in these cases, and to the families of Madisyn, Tate, Justin, and Hana for their continued courage. As they said tonight, there is much more work to do to protect our kids from gun violence, but their resolve has ensured that justice was served. It’s also important to thank Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald and her office, who have worked tirelessly on these cases for over two years. They felt the Oxford story in their guts like all of us, and they took action, even when others may not have pursued something so groundbreaking. Michigan law now reinforces the precedent these cases and the courts have set here: If you have an unsecured weapon in a home with children, and one of them uses it to commit a crime, you can be charged and held accountable.
Many Michiganders use TikTok – including my own family and my own staff! – but as a lifelong national security professional, I don’t want the Chinese Community Party to have ready access to millions of Americans’ data.
The number one killer of children in America is gun violence. And if we truly care about keeping our kids safe, we should come together in a bipartisan way at the federal level to address this crisis.
Yesterday, we held an important hearing on protecting American agriculture from adversaries. There is bipartisan support for seeing food security through a national security lens: we need to be able to feed ourselves, by ourselves. That’s why I introduced bipartisan legislation that would let national security experts review significant real estate purchases by foreign entities of concern.
Had the pleasure of welcoming Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm, Acting Secretary of Labor Julie Su, and UAW President Shawn Fain to Lansing alongside UAW Local 652 VP Lena Wyeth, Governor Gretchen Whitmer, and @lccstars Provost Dr. Sally Welch this morning for this exciting announcement. It’s either Team America or Team China that will build the next generation of cars – and I want us on the job. I can’t think of a better place than Michigan to roll out the standards that will shape our skilled workforce. We *invented* the middle class here in Michigan, where you could work in an auto plant and afford the car you were building. So, it’s only fitting that we continue that tradition of training skilled workers.

The A-10 fighter mission at Selfridge Air National Guard Base symbolizes MI’s contributions to our national defense. My bipartisan amendment – with almost 30 cosponsors – would have preserved the fighters at Selfridge & directed the Air Force to identify a future replacement. Even though it isn’t moving forward in the NDAA, we will keep fighting for Selfridge.
On a day where the Supreme Court threw out a challenge to the availability of the safe and effective abortion drug Mifepristone, the GOP House majority is using the historically bipartisan defense bill to restrict choice for service women. Watch what they do, not what they say.
This morning, I had the opportunity to sit down with Swedish Ambassador Urban Ahlin and welcome Sweden to NATO after they joined our alliance this spring. We had a great conversation, and agreed on the importance of continuing to support Ukraine in its fight against Russia. With an advanced and innovative economy, a highly-trained and experienced military, and strategically important location, Sweden has much to offer NATO, and I’m looking forward to working together in the years to come.
It’s either Team USA or Team China that will build the next generation of electric cars and as a national security professional, I want us on the job. @energy’s rollout of training standards through its Battery Workforce Initiative will ensure the next generation of cars will be made here by a workforce that’s trained here.
We voted on the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act today. My full statement.
America ALWAYS needs to be a place where we can feed ourselves, by ourselves. Thanks to Jerry Hebron, U.S. Department of Agriculture’s advisor on urban agriculture, for convening a robust roundtable of farmers from across Detroit yesterday, and to Tepfirah Rushdan, Detroit’s first director of urban agriculture, for adding her wisdom to the conversation. These hard-working farmers have been working here for years, and they walked me through their needs on water access, work force development, crop insurance etc. But what came through most clearly was their passion for uplifting their communities, providing healthy food in neighborhoods that might not otherwise get it, and supporting our youth. As I continue my work in the House Agriculture Committee on the Farm Bill, it was really helpful to hear from folks on the ground on what we need to do to bring more farmers, more food, and more opportunities into our communities.

Make no mistake: the fall of Roe wasn’t enough for Republicans. This week their focus is on taking away our servicewomen’s right to reproductive health care. The annual defense bill passed committee 57-1, yet it’s now laden with culture war amendments in the House. My thoughts:
Today the EPA announced new auto emission standards. My full statement:
Next Wednesday I’ll be holding a virtual town hall to discuss the recent Alabama Supreme Court ruling related to IVF, the potential impact at the federal level and in Michigan, and the state of play on other issues related to reproductive rights.
