Emma Dabiri Instagram – Coupla bits from recent Sunday Independent feature on #disobedientbodies. This book continues to travel 🕊️
When I was growing up one of the biggest insults was “she loves herself” think about that…
(This is in reference to our convo @garydunneinsta )
“In meticulous Dabiri fashion, she delves into the past that has brought us to our uneasy present, covering witch trials, colonialism, patriarchy and capitalism, interwoven with the story of her own relationship with clothes, makeup and beauty. It is Dabiri’s skill that she can marry an argument on adornment as a form of oppression with a discussion of her youthful eyeliner obsession, but that’s what she does”.
“Because our bodies are, as I’ve said, our interface with the world. So wanting to present them in certain ways should be something we can enjoy without always holding on to the fact that for women in particular, our appearance is not the most important thing about us or not the thing where our value should primarily be placed.”
“I think no matter who you are, there will always be somebody who is better looking than you or perceived as better looking than you. There will always be someone more successful, based on particular metrics. And because so many women and girls are told their primary value is the way they look, that becomes a very vulnerable position to occupy. It’s very fragile and you’re constantly in this trap of comparison and competition and insecurity.”
“I don’t spend that much time scrolling through images of other women. I’m not really on it like that. I’m not deeply invested in strangers or the way strangers look.” | Posted on 26/May/2024 22:45:26
