Giovannie Espiritu Instagram – My Grandpa Jerry’s uniform is one of the most precious things I own. When things went really bad with my stepfather, he and my Mommy Nits (grandma) took me in. I slept on their living room couch in a one-bedroom apartment in South San Francisco, and Grandpa Jerry would make breakfast for me and Mommy Nits every morning. He even rode the bus with me every day, all the way to the Sunset District to get to school so no one would mess with me. He made the best mini blueberry pies and could whip up sourdough from scratch. He was the closest thing to a decent father figure that I have.
Some of my favorite memories are of going to antique shops with him and Mommy Nits and having picnics in Golden Gate Park in the back of his orange Ford F-150. Even when he was sick, we danced together in the rain during a Philippine thunderstorm and nearly got hit by lightning (it struck a nearby electrical pole instead). I miss him a lot.
