“E Mau Ke Ea: Sovereignty, Sanctuary, and Collective Liberation
Kamehameha Paiea is a pivotal figure in Hawaiʻi’s sovereign history. He has been celebrated as a warrior, a political strategist, and a devout religious leader, however; Kamehameha’s contributions extend far beyond his acumen in battle. In this keynote Dr. Jamaica Heolimeleikalani Osorio will discuss Kamehameha’s profound and often overlooked role in expanding the institution of the Puʻuhonua, which distinguished Hawaiian governance in prioritizing sanctuary and refuge in the burgeoning Hawaiian Kingdom. With this mo’olelo in mind, we will discuss the necessity of refuge and care as a central component of self-determination in a time of rising seas, extractive capitalism, growing fascism, and increased militarized imperial violence.
Dr. Osorio invites us all to explore how these ʻŌiwi and abolitionist principles can inspire our efforts to create a just and peaceful world.
