Janice Bryant Howroyd Instagram – #Juneteenth for me is not a celebration; rather, a commemoration of the emancipation of enslaved people in the US, at which time legislation had not yet been passed to officially recognize them as a whole people. The Fourteenth Amendment was not passed until 1868. Juneteenth was first celebrated in Texas after passage in 1862 of the Emancipation Proclamation. For me, it is a day of reflection rather than celebration. A day to assist, engage in good-doing, or simply quietly enjoy freedom. My family chooses to honor the efforts of freedom fighters past and present by reassessing and engaging in the social/civic efforts we believe work for all people. Mrs. Opal Lee, who I admire and have great affection for, gives advice to the next generation with a powerful reminder that with faith, hard work, and unity, we can create lasting good change. 🙏🏾 ✊🏾 Watch the full, powerful interview linked in my bio. Acknowledge this day in your own way, knowing that all history is American history, and together, we win as a nation. | Posted on 19/Jun/2024 21:39:59
