Oxford has a tradition of academic dress called “sub fusc” that goes back to the medieval monks in the early stages of the university. Various cuts of the gown indicate academic hierarchy with a wee classist papal vibe as one wears a “commoners gown” until they graduate to a more priest-like flouncy sleeve.
