As we enter a new month, one (hopefully!) filled with festive cheer, I think it’s important that we remember all the families still struggling with prematurity and all of the tiny babies currently in the NICUs, across the land….

As you may know, our little boy was born in July this year, in the midst of the pandemic, 9 weeks early. (Born at 31 weeks). This is him in his incubator. There is nothing to show size perspective here, but he was tiny. Just over 3lb. He was in that incubator for the first 6 weeks of his life and I found those weeks terrifying and draining 😔💔

I will always be grateful for the Hull Women’s and Children hospital staff who cared for us; the Maple ward team who looked after me during my (often very lonely, scary and overwhelming) month-long stay when my waters broke at 28weeks (people like Kat, Suzanne and Lindsey spring to mind, to name just a few), the midwife Jo, all the NICU staff who cared for my boy once he was born (way too many to mention), helping him first to breath and then gain strength and finally for Angela in outreach who’s support I appreciated so much. They all made a deeply distressing situation much better.

Covid made the whole experience much worse. I wasn’t allowed a single visitor whilst in hospital pre-birth. Once born, myself and my partner were not allowed to visit our son together and no other family members were allowed to visit him at all😔
