When my dad was the same age, he and his 2 younger brothers were ripped from their parents and taken to Mogumber Mission.
Their mum had five pregnancies after that, 4 stillborns and a baby who died at 2 months old. Each death compounding my grandmother’s grief who was desperately trying to fill the heartbreak of having 3 children stolen.
My dad dedicated his life to improving outcomes for Aboriginal people. He would be as horrified as I am to know that history is being repeated.
Despite apologies from governments and police commissioners, our children are still being removed at alarming rates. Tens of thousands of First Nations families are fighting a broken, unfair and racist system to get their kids back.
Now more than ever it’s time to listen to those who know best to make sure there are no further stolen generations. Instead of just closing gaps, we should all be scoring goals.
